It truly blows my mind how seriously you take this message board.

What would you do to fill the void in your life if Dave's ESL were to cease to exist?

...so a slight breeze would also blow your mind?

Patrick is very helpful here. His serious answers do some good in this online community. There are a ton of trolls and flamers here, but very few folks that consistently try to help with their responses and feedback. If those folks did NOT take it seriously, this place would be much poorer for it.

What do you offer?

I'll have a few books for sale as soon as my girlfriend finishes the one she's reading now, which is the last of the lot we want to sell.

Patrick does give good information....but he also gives terrible information.

Didn't say he was perfect -- the only poster that might always give good information is Ttom. Smile

That's great to hear and I'm happy when anyone gets more than the standard that has been in place for many years. It hopefully means that wages will move upwards instead of down or staying stagnant. However, I think you might be an exception on this one. Even disregarding race, you are an exception to the hagwon pay scale.

What is your housing, vacation, work area, work responsiblities, working hours?

Did you get the job through a recruiter or a reference? Did you negotiate with the owner or was this the initial offer?

The reason I ask, is I take an active role in reviewing contracts in the contract sticky and I'd like to give the most accurate advice possible. I also like to know how often people are successful negotiating terms and what they usually win on.

Either way, it goes to show everyone that there are good jobs out there. You just have to look hard enough.

Yeah I just wanted to state that it was possible to get paid on the higher end. Now, looking for jobs again I will admit that it was a lucky exception.

It was with Chung Dahm in Ansan. Housing was a loft, pretty big with the upstairs area, vacation was quite horrible: 1 week, and we worked most holidays but when it came down to it I was fine with it considering the salary. Working hours were 4p-10p MTTHF 230p-830p W.

Work area? Like in the school or outside? In school we had our own classrooms, no co-teachers, supplies given. Outside the school we were like a block away from the 2001 Outlet in Gojan, Ansan. Other than teaching by the book, we had (sometimes)weekly reports and monthly reports, meetings from time to time and nothing else major.

Found the job by recruiter on career builder where I saw a link for Aclipse, then applied through Aclipse. No negotiations, that was the offer.

Being back in the states now, makes me wonder why I ever left but I guess I had some things to attend to here so oh well I guess I'll be taking a 2-300,000w pay cut for my second year.....shoot me.

Thats a pretty sweet gig (minus the vacation). Especially for Chung Dahm, which is consistently one of the most complained about schools on here.

I think this stands as an example of the bias of this board regarding how many complaints there are vs. the reality of teaching in Korea. I'm not saying the complaints aren't valid, but more people come here for help or to vent. Which unfairly represents most teachers who are off enjoying themselves.

Thanks for the info. Cheers.

I do my best to help others on the board, via pm or email. I also respond to the more ridiculous or demeaning stuff because its sometimes amusing or needs to be said.

No one is perfect right but exactly what to you offer here besides sarcasm willteachforfood?

Basically they try to pay the least amount. Pure and simple. They'll lowball you and if you take it great. If they can pay less and get more they will. I forgot the qualifications: white, speaks english and can walk and chew gum.

Same thing at my old hagwon. My boss openly admitted he couldn't pay me what I wanted for my second contract because all of the Hagwons in the area (about 20) had a set price range they paid for western teachers.

How about you just ask me? CHUNG DAHM LEARNING, formerly Chung Dahm Institute. Anything else you need to say to justify calling me a toy with bright colored hair?
