there have been a plethora of threads on this.
Siheung is a very drawn out place though. Is it Ansan side Siheung or Bucheon side Siheung? |

I'm at a Technical high school and I hate it.
Well, not necessarily hate it. It is what you make of it.
My kids have no motivation, they don't do anything, I never get to accomplish anything worthwhile. It's more baby sitting than teaching.
Don't get me wrong, I have some awesome students, but I rarely get to do anything with them as I'm always busy with the trouble makers. The teachers here are always busy dealing with shenanigans.
It's not for the feint of heart. |

Yup, you should find out what kind of tech school it is. What trade crafts they teach. That'll give you a good indicator of what it'll be like teaching there. For the great majority of them that teach blue collar stuff. Well....... welcome to hell on earth. No one really loves a tech school. You either like it or not. I'm on the fence, it's funny cause everything here is so extreme it's entertaining.
Though it's actually pretty hard not only because of the discipline problems but also because whatever you'll be teaching is scraping the floor low. I've taught elementary and middle schools in equally impoverished neighborhoods. Compared to them, a typical tech kid is a little lower than a 2nd grade elementary school student (If your lucky) and they act like pre-schoolers. It's really hard to design lessons that they're do without shutting down cause it's too hard or won't launch a coup cause "They know this" even though we all know they're borderline retarded. It's a really delicate balance
As nathan said, you need a really, really, really tough skin to survive here. A friend that worked at another tech school told me the teacher before him. A lady in her 30s only lasted 3 weeks, whenever she wasn't in class. She was in the bathroom crying. |

I've known of some Korean female teachers that have done the same (cried) when dealing with tekkie highschool boys.
that's why I mentioned in a different thread that being bigger/tougher/stronger isn't a bad quality to have for a teacher there.
That's one thing they do actually respect. (albeit begrudgingly if you're a teacher)
It can be a "different" experience.
Here's an email I just received from a departing K teacher

My new school is an academic high school. So most of students have a passion for their study. I was embarrassed all the time at ____ technical HS because many students don't learn anything in class. they don't even take the class. But i think i have had a good experience for 2 years in my life. Now i am spending rewarding days at my new school. |

I taught at three high schools. Two of them had technical and academic classes. The other had technical students and academic track students thrown into the same class. The last school was miserable to teach at. It was nearly impossible to get the technical students involved and I had to spend a majority of the class babysitting them which meant the better students got bored. I know some teachers here have had some success but IMO conversation English has little place in technical high schools. |

I always wondered what the suicide rate was for teachers that rotated out of a tech school into an academic school and then thrown back into a tech school. Most MS, HS teachers seem like they only rotate to a tech school once in their career unless they seriously screw up somewhere and then it's just punishment |

It's all about points, if you have less, the more likely you'll get a placement that you didn't request. So usually younger teachers will get the shaft. However I do believe working a tech school rewards you with more points for a shorter period of time. So if a k-teacher is really ambitious they can rack up points the longer they teach at a tech school. |

THIS.
though there are some teachers (a tiny percentage) that actually don't mind working at a tekkie school. They usually also live nearby which is a key consideration for most teachers when requesting their schools.
here's another e-mail from a Korean teacher:
Quote: |
How are you?
Did you hear that the 14 people of our teachers got to transfer to another school? |
.......Even though I'm not sure the writer understood just how PERFECT his English sentence structure and phraseology were in the bolded part of the sentence!
I was also told that exactly THREE Korean teachers in my school expressed a willingness/desire to be homeroom teachers for the upcoming school year. The rest will be forced into it kicking and screaming |

not sure if it's just once and or how that works exactly. I may do some research on that topic and get back to you.
One of my Korean English teachers (who turned out to be a great co worker/coteacher) got transferred into our tekkie school last year from a high level academic HS. She confessed to me that she was "depressed" for a good month after learning the news and coming to our school.
She can't wait for the 2nd year to pass soon enough so she can get the hell out (paraphrasing her words) |

I think hardship duty at a tekkie school (especially if also rural) (extra points) is a minimum of 2 years. Then you can apply to go elsewhere and where and whether you can go will depend on your "points".
my main coteacher could've escaped this year after a little less than 3 years (she started out as a brand new teacher) but in order to have the points to get to a school near her home she'll suffer thru another year and next year she'll be scott free.
I'm sure this all depends on your POE too. What works in SMOE may not in GEPIK for e.g. |

Actually, I've heard some rural tech schools aren't so bad. It might be that they are in smaller towns that parents and teachers might be socially allowed to come down harder on them for misbehavior than their city counterparts. They do have different names like 'industrial', 'commercial', or 'agricultural' schools. |

I knew of one, he was in his mid-40's and was the head of staff, he actually requested it. Although I was in a smaller city though, so maybe it isn't as bad as other tech schools. But you are correct in saying that location is a huge factor for a teacher deciding, maybe he was out of schools to go to that was near his home. |
