It has come to my attention that there are microbreweries in Gangnam. After doing some googling as well as research on this forum, I discovered that there's actually around 6.

Go to Gangnam - there are half a dozen micro breweries there including Castle Praha, 500 Brauhaus, Big Rock, Platinum and the best of the best - Oktoberfest. In Oktoberfest they serve really, really good beer (weis, pilsner or dunkels) that they brew in the building and it's 5000w for 500cc - the best price you'll get anywhere. PM me if you need directions to get there. |
I wanted this thread to be a heads up for people who were unaware of this, and I wanted to get more information and opinions about the different places as well, along with directions and/or a useful map.
Questions:
1) Are they generally within walking distance of each other?
2) Like most people, I'm unable to go on weekdays because of work - are there any places where you can do happy hour or all you can drink type things on the weekends or national holidays?
3) If I only went to one, which one should it be and why? |

Must it be in Gangam? There's an amazing microbrew bar that just opened near Noksapyeong station. It's called Craftworks and they serve around a half-dozen really great beers. My favourite's the weiss.
They've got great eats as well. They make their own nacho chips.
To get there, go out Noksapyeong exit 2, walk straight down the hill (the base is on your left) until the underpass. Cross under the underpass, exit to your left, cross the road and a few steps later you're there. |

Oktoberfest is in now in Hongdae too, just around the corner from Castle Praha. There's another micro brewery called Queen's Head not too far away too. |

Actually, Itaewon/Hongdae area is even better since I'm normally out there anyway. I hadn't heard of that place, I will definitely check it out, thanks.

Awesome, will check those out as well. Do you have directions on how to get to Queen's Head? |

I will second Craftworks. Great place. Beer is made near Gapyeong because of the spring water. Brewmaster is a German guy who has been making phenomenal beers for years. Most expensive beer is 5000 won for a pint. The Geumgang Ale is brilliant. The food is also really good and reasonably priced. My thoughts? He will have to expand his premises very quickly. The expected level of quality is always getting higher for expats in Korea. (In Seoul anyway) The owner of Craftworks just levelled up. |

He is quite an experienced brewer, I've heard. But although he trained as a brewer in Germany, I'm pretty sure he's Korean. He used to run a place in Yeouido and one in Ilsan although the craftworks beer is all brewed at his new brewery in Gapyeong. |

Is he the same guy who provided the beer for the short-lived converted micro-brewery in MiaSamgari? Gapyeong rings a bell. |

Nice thread. Haven't been to a microbrewery in Korea. Went back home for vacation and went to my favorite one, and had me wondering about the microbrewery scene in Korea. |

craftworks is definitely the best of all the micros in seoul. i can definitely see that they're going to need more space soon though. i haven't tried the food except for some of my friend's fries. they use korean potatoes and they don't turn out too well for good solid fries. they're really limp.
as far as other breweries, big rock comes in a close second if you're in the gangnam area. again, haven't had the 'anju' food there, except for sunday breakfast, which wasn't that amazing.
both places have at least 6 different brews to choose from. hell of a lot better than your hite beer gardens. |

The Geumgang Ale is so good, you'll be ordering it by the Dear Liter.
Craftsworks is definitely the place to go for excellently priced, high quality brewed beer.

Craftworks is amazing. If they had a point card, I'd have, well, a lot of freakin' points. BTW . . . try their cake; it's sinfully delicious. |

Thumbs up for Craftworks from me as well. Was in last night and the place was packed at 8:00. Food was passable (spot on about the fries...limp and soggy) but the beer, which is their main selling point, was outstanding.
Specifically, it's in/next to the IBK Building across from the entrance to Haebangchon.
While you're there, stop by upstairs at Studio X-Fitness and sign up for some boot camp classes. |

Craftworks is coming out with an IPA next month. My nipples get hard thinking about it. |

Craftworks also has a fairly decent selection of Single Malt Scotch. |

Went to Craftworks on Saturday around 10:30, it was PACKED. Haven't seen that many white people in one spot in all my 9 months in Korea. Amazing beer though. Will be going back there again soon, hopefully it's not so crowded next time. |
