| If you want to a quiet place without wall to wall tourists, head to Davao. Samal Island has a lot of small resorts like Blue Waters. Its cheap as well. Pearl Farm is the most expensive resort but it is beautiful and secluded. |

Yeah I'm sure Afghanistan is also nice this time of year.
Boy I really hate people that recommend Mindanao without telling people about the risks. Some people like to travel when they go somewhere. And if you go to Davao, though it may be safe, if you want to travel around to any of the surrounding areas you may get yourself in trouble. Many of the areas surrounding Davao are known to have had terrorist activity in the past. |

| I also spent quite a bit more money than I had intended which makes me understand the point that one poster was trying to make about why not expect to spend a little extra and go somewhere more "clean" and developed and with more interesting cultural sites, but I don't agree with the message that nobody should ever go to the Philippines. |
I'm genuinely glad that you were able to come away with a positive experience, but I have to say that the above statement (and others like it in this thread) is more than a little confusing. I just can't understand how someone can recognize he has overpaid for something and then still go on to recommend it.
But, it's over and done with; no point warning someone that's already done it, right? I'll just keep my mouth shut until the next thread, heh. |

I was rather disappointed with Davao, which is the Philippines' third-biggest city. Downtown Davao was like something in the sticks and that city needs a lot more development, in my opinion. I didn't get to hit Samal Island but will next time.
The weird thing about Davao was, people leave you alone. I got stared at but the natives generally kept to themselves. The level of English, however, is lower than that of other places in the Phils.
For those who want to visit Davao, the places to stay at are Bagobo House Hotel or Ponce Suites. |

In Mindinao, I've been to General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Camuiguin Island, Davao, and Samal Island. I took a bus everywhere too.
There are places to avoid in Mindinao, but all of the places I went to and the bus rides I took were just fine, and known to be fine. Your warning is kind of like saying 'don't go to the U.S., as you'll get shot by a gangster in a drive-by'.
Sure, it could technically happen....but. |

It is significantly different. The Philippine military is regularly engaged in armed conflicts with militants in Mindanao. The United States government website also regularly posts warnings to travellers about travelling in Mindanao. |

The real no-go zone is that trail of islands south-west of Mindanao that is close to Malaysian Borneo. Those are pirate and terrorist havens.

I'm sure it also helps to be with a native to avoid trouble. I tend to travel alone so I'd be extra careful. |
