Thanks for all the info...I'm a veggie too, the thought of schools supplying lunch never even occurred to me...at the very least I hope I can just eat rice and some sort of raw/steamed veggies Smile Is that realistic?

I wish it were. Raw veggies aren't really a thing here, and I've never seen steamed veggies outside a Western restaurant.

For awhile, when relying on unreliable school lunches, I'd prep a big container of finely chopped raw veg (carrots, cukes, spinach) and I'd keep it along with my own bottle of red pepper paste and sesame oil in the school's kitchen. Then I could just grab some rice and the veg I had on hand while the others were serving up their own lunches and I'd eat bibimbap.

It comes down to this. educate yourself, and get hooked up with other vegetarians here. There used to be a vegetarian club and would have dinners every few weeks or so. There are Indian restaurants, and for any vegetarian, that is generally heaven. Also, temple food is all vegetarian.

I never ate out too much. I did eat french fries. I hate kimchi, and most of it is made with fish water anyways. That **** stinks.

Your diet will be a bit limited as far as comparing it to home. In the USA we have so many fake meat substitutes, etc that it is so easy to be vegan or vegetarian. I suggest bringing some vitamins with a b12 supplement.

you can always eat corn and potato pizza

As a non-fish eating vegetarian, I had been eating school lunch for all the social reasons, which ended up being me eating a big pile of white rice and occasionally a vegetable here or there. It was rare that I had anything else, except about 1 day a week when they had fruit. It was the saddest lunch time I've ever experienced.
I stopped eating school lunch when I finally got paystubs and realized how much they were charging me for the pile of rice! It's not cheap. It was costing me over 100,000 won per month for the worst lunch ever. Your school won't care if you don't eat the lunch. If anyone does, they'll get over it and if they don't, they're not worth worrying about. Save yourself the hassle of picking through stuff and the expense and bring your lunch. There'll be plenty of adjuma teachers who bring their own lunches and eat in the teachers' room.

#1 = rice - as often as thrice daily (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

this is their "main dish".

#2o this they add kimchi and other sidedishes, like radish and other veggies

#3typically some small protein source, usually fish/fish derived.

#4 soup (tends to be fish derived, or boiled kimchi derived)

spicy depends one how you define it. If you like some spicy food stateside, it's not spicy at all. If you tend to always eat European based cuisine which is not spicy, then the constant use of gojuchang (red pepper taste) can affect you somewhat, and some stuff is spicy/hot.

The Seoul Vegetarian Club is still active on facebook, and they have a link to a veggie map showing many vegetarian and vegan places that serve kimchi that's not fishy.

There are also many strictly vegan Loving Hut restaurants all over Korea ...

Seriously. Your school dietician must be making bank. My school lunches amounted to less than a dollar a day.

That said, it is NOT hard to be vegetarian in Korea. I can walk down the street into a korean restaurant where they'll serve me all manner of poached greens dribbled in a little sesame oil. Vegetables I've never even seen before can be bought at the street market, farmer's markets, or the supermarket. At my local homeplus I can get all kinds of mushrooms, lettuce, kohlrabi, and kale.

I'm sick of these fake hipster vegetarians complaining about the lack of "meat substitutes." Try eating vegetables, not soy-based processed fake meat. I don't even eat soy, and THAT can make it a little rough.

I don't know how the lunches are so expensive. The average is 106,600 won per month according to my paystubs which are itemized. Needless to say I no longer partake.

i have a little deal with the lunch ladies where they fix me something special (basic and easily made but suited to my tastes and diet) every day. (and in gratitude I supply them with coffee)

were if not for this arrangement I would've opted out of lunch a long time ago, even when it was about 2500 won a day. Now it's 3500.
106K means a little more than 5K won a day. Sounds a bit high.
