Our invited speakers will address issues such as the portrayal of foreign English teachers in the media, statistics on foreigner criminality, society and stereotypes, in addition to legislation which affects teachers in Korea.

Sounds like another whine and moan fest that pops up regularly here.
The Canadian embassy has sure nailed it with another fantastic event.

We covered this last time around.

I dodged the bullet last time, but the reports from the front lines where we were promised Pancakes for showing up:
Quote:

It was pouring rain and the few booths set-up had the staff members' desks pushed almost to the edge of the tarp, leaving you in the rain as you ate your "pancakes". Pancakes, lol. The pancakes were cut into 16 pieces, with each individual piece dropped into a paper cup with syrup dripped on it. Lame. The piece was so small I had to burp just to taste it!

I was confused as to why they'd have a Korean band playing Korean traditional music during "Canada Night" (and since when are "Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Ole Oak Tree" Korean traditional songs?)

Yes, a fantastic quality event.

You know they're broke. They can't do business charging $30 for a stamp on a document.[/list]

I think he is predicting what will happen. I expect the same.

The embassy staff will ask about how foreigners are badly portrated. A bunch of people will stand up and whine, and then the staff will nod, take notes, and do nothing about it. Either by lack of effort, lack of ability, or both.

I don't feel it's worth my time so I am not going. If I lived nearby, maybe,

No, I'm saying these are topics that are well covered here and generally generate a lot of whining and moaning from a certain contingent of the forums who look for even the slightest thing to claim everyone is a xenophobic racist out to get them.
They've managed to cherry pick just about every topic that does that, most of which are really non-issues, but hyped up by a few bloggers and people looking for an excuse.

About the only thing that is truly useful out of that is the new legislation, but it seems to be tacked on as an after thought, and not the focus of what they're planning.

I'm sure ttompatz could cover the new legislation in a 5 minute post anyway.

The list of official speakers is disappointing. Unless the bloggers on the list of speakers have some kind of legal background there's no reason to invite them to speak at an official embassy event. Their blog is their platform and if all they can add is to this event is their opinions then why invite them at all?

Well...I wish I did something else yesterday. Unless anything Earth-shattering happened after I left, it was a bit of a waste of time.

When did you leave?

I thought the first presentation was, well awful.

I thought the guest panel that presented during the second half was quite good.
