currently have two native English teachers, where both positions will still be funded for the 2011-2012 school year? I am asking because of the four offers I got I accepted the elementary school who currently have two English teachers that will complete their contract in mid March and the school has already replaced them both (me being one of them).
I have a contract signed and will make my run to Suwon within the next week but I am still a bit concern that last minute funds won't come through and I will be screwed out of a job.
I was led to believe by quite a few people that any schools in Gyeonggi with two English teachers will have to cut one. With so many schools losing all budgets, why is this elementary school able to fund two teachers in March?
My current school of 500 students will not be able to hire an English teacher after me. So, am I giving myself a chance to be screwed over in March if fundings don't come through by choosing this school?
It didn't hit me to ask them if they already received the funds for two teachers. When are funds normally distributed? It sucks because I already turned down the other 3 schools |

I'm in the same situation, my first day is supposed to be March 1. Everything looks fine so far, but I don't know anything about the budget cut situation. Did you get your VISA yet?
EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, my school has only had one English teacher. They are adding me as the second one because they have so many new students (due to expansion). |

Are you at a public school in Gyeonggi-Do? I'm at a big school with 42 classes, hence the need for two teachers. I hope everything goes smoothly for us.
I'm making a run to Suwon this week for my visa transfer. I have all my docs from the school already. |

There's a lot of politics going on behind the scenes with this "cost cutting" so be prepared for anything, good or bad. |

This will probably be the last "big" year for programs like EPIK. Big cuts are coming soon, it will be funny to see some of those smug teachers suddenly running around trying to find jobs. The golden days of ESL in Korea are nearly over, exist stage left to China. |

You know the typical Korean bureaucratic mentality. They can only plan things well as long as they don't follow them well. |

Maybe, maybe not. I've just returned from a week long co-teachers training for my province. They had money left over on their budget and had to spend it before the end of the financial year. My provincial supervisor has already said he wants us to re-sign for August.
The westerners on the course were all level 1 or 1+, only 20 of us and our co-teachers. EPIK seems to be on sound financial footing. When they start to not renew the more experienced teachers, to save 500K or so a month, will be the first sign of impending doom.
I'm at a 1600 student school and I'm the only westerner. maybe GEPIK's financial woes were brought about, in some way, by having 2 western teachers in some of their schools. The only EPIK school I have heard about with 2 western teachers has 1800 students.
They've just increased the number of 5th and 6th grade English classes a week from 2 to 3 beginning in March. So I think it's all good for now. Hopefully there's even the chance for some extra classes and therefore more cash from March onwards |
