I'm starting this thread because I'm sure there are a few overweight people out there who are living in Korea, and feel they want to do something about it.

I am certainly one of those people. I refuse to delude myself about why I'm overweight. Quite simply, I eat too much (including too much junk food) and I don't exercise nearly enough. The combination of these two things mean that I'm quite far over the kind of weight I would like to be.

I've been putting it off for a long time, but I've finally decided that enough is enough. I'm going to do something about it.

The reason I started this thread here on the Korea board rather than in the off-topic forum is that a lot of things in a weightloss regime are profoundly affected by the fact we live in Korea. There are lots of websites around for this sort of thing, but they talk about the foods they eat and the exercise they do in the UK, Australia, USA, Canada etc. A lot of the information isn't relevant to us in Korea.

About me... I'm a late twenties male and I come from the UK. I believe in something like this that it's important to have a specific goal, even if it's short term. So, my short term goal is simply lose some timber in the next four months before I go on my summer holiday to SE Asia.

SO.... I'm hoping that there'll be some people out there on Dave's to join me on this quest. This thread will be somewhere we can report in, update on what we are doing about exercising and eating, and generally report that all-important weight loss!

So come on.. who's with me? Very Happy

Don't snack, portion your meals and excercise a little. You'll lose weight fast.

hey thanks for the advice Smile

do you speak from personal experience, or did you see a buddy lose the weight fast?

also... by 'portion your meals', do you just mean eat smaller portions?

Yea. In a good diet, you can eat anything you want. Just not so much of it. Portion control is how i lost 20lbs. after college.

He might also mean set aside a certain amount for each meal ahead of time and stick to it, which I guess is almost the same thing as portion control.

I was chubby in college but I'm lean and ripped now. The secret? Low carb and free weights. It's that simple.

Love what you do so much that eating becomes a necessary evil.

I'm gaining a lot of weight right now because of quitting cigarettes. I'm up to around 165lbs from 150lbs and I feel like I'm going to gain a bit more before I even out. I've already started climbing mountains, eating less, walking in my breaks at work but it's hard to manage since everytime I get a craving the first thing that goes through my head is "I NEED CHOCOLATE."

Anyway, living in Korea is actually a great place to exercise. More than people think. You don't even need a gym membership.

I bet there is a mountain less than 5km from where ever you are so... climb it. YA! Smile

PS. I lost almost 100lbs after high school by running. I lost it in a period of two years, most of it in the first year. It's all about what you eat and how often you exercise.

Check out bodyrock.tv for simple short workouts.

Diet is very important (Eating clean). So eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables with as many meals, try to include lean protein in your diet either through chicken breast, lean beef, protein shakes, eggs. Eating 5-6 times a day is helpful especially if you have trouble keeping track of portion size. So a portion would be the size of your palm for proteins. Check out the section on food and diet on bodyrock.

I know from experience. I stopped drinking soda, eating after 8pm, eating after a night of drinking, only ate two meals a day, and when the food was gone, I stopped eating. Portions were whatever they gave me at a Gimbap cheonkuk, or whatever I ordered from Paris Baguette, Home plus, etc.
If you cut out 2 things that are unhealthy(soda, snacking) you'll see results.

Oh yeah and as much as it sucks for the alcoholics here, booze is the #1 fattener of all. Kills your metabolism, kills your testosterone, and is full of useless carbs and calories. Combine that with a lack of exercise and you're got a fat waegook. I would wager that by cutting out alcohol alone you will see the most improvement more than any other change you make.

Good for you. I was in a similar position about a year and a half ago, and since then I've lost about 50 pounds. My advice: learn how to count calories and try to stay under 2000/day, exercise (for me this was simply just taking really long walks, like 2-3 hours or more), and never ever drink your calories (soda, coffees, booze). If you create a consistent calorie deficit and stick with it the weight will come off.

Alcohol is the biggest excuse, but those who are more than armchair knowledgable know booze never made anyone really fat. You eat fast food 3-4 times a week, I'll drink everyday. I'll win because you'll gain.

You're giving some horrible advice.

I've heard you should snack with healthy snacks throughout the day to speed up your metabolism. Or eat 4-5 small meals a day.

Also, eating smaller portions of fatty foods won't help you lose weight. Eating smaller portion of the right foods (low carbs, high proteins / veggies) will.

Exercise a little? You need to exercise 3-5 times a week doing cardio and weight training exercise to lose weight most effectively.

let's keep it super basic (for starters)

1) control your carbs, watch overall calories/portion control
2) don't drink your calories

and you're probably 3/4 of the way home.

then you can talk about exercise strategies, eating more/smaller meals in a day (this is more related to weightlifters who want to ingest/process more protein), etc etc etc
