This is a great article on Lara Logan. It relates the way the media reported on her case to identity politics.

I wouldn't exactly call the article excellent. It's got a few valid points about identity politics, upon which it tries to piggyback a lot of "poor little Israel" whining and some pretty absurd comparisons.

Quote:
This week, a group of female US soldiers filed a class action lawsuit against Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and his predecessor Donald Rumsfeld. The plaintiffs allege that both men and the US defense establishment are responsible for the sexual assaults they suffered during their military service. They claim that the men who abused them were a product of US military culture.

The US media has provided blanket coverage of the story, which effectively places the entire US military on trial for rape.

What is interesting about the lawsuit story is that it highlights the alleged perpetrator. Coverage of the lawsuit has been heavy on details about the alleged misogyny of US military culture.

In stark contrast, coverage of Logan's sexual assault makes almost no mention of the perpetrators.

Certainly the issue of Egypt's societal misogyny has been ignored.

A less sinister explanation for this alleged discrepancy is that the US militaty gets closer scrutiny because it's funded by US taxpayers, and purports to advance American interests around the globe. So yes, if some of the people getting paid to defend the US are raping each other, well, that's kind of a major issue for Americans, I'd say. The thugs in Cairo weren't commiting their rapes on the dime of the US taxpayer.

This article is weak sauce and it has nothing to do with Israel. If I remember correctly, Israel recently put a guy in jail for claiming to be Jewish before having sex with a woman (this was a one night stand, not some kind of long term fake courtship).

Also, there is no clear story here. If she were assaulted by Mubarak's thugs, then there'd be an easy sell. Journalism is a lazy business, and here the easier story is to focus on what a bad-ass Logan is. There's no way CBS woudl have released her name without her consent. She's a tough lady, and that's a much easier sell as a story.
