				| When I lived in Korea, I had this problem for the first year. Then, I started sanitizing my hands about 10 times or more a day using purell. The problem largely went away... And since I've quit smoking and left Korea I've had one cold (in 9 months) and that was in Cambodia. So, if you are in Korea, leave. If you smoke, stop. That should clear it up all nice. |

Indeed.

Smokers should not be surpised in the least if they have a sore throat. It usually leads to FURTHER "health" complications

Yes, wearing a mask (instead of gleefully getting GASSED outside in the busy streets) and washing hands are both sound recommendations.

After 4 years here , korean doctors were mystified at the same problems you mention. After visiting a small town doctor in canada, he diagnosed me with allergies in 5 minutes. He was right. Take a anti-histamine.

Whenever I mentioned to a korean doctor ' might it be the pollution' they would answer... ' nooooooooo, of course not'.

Turns out that is exactly what it was. |

I got tonsilitis this past week went going to the doctor a few times and got pillls that make me feel silly like I am on speed, but seem to be helping. 3 days ago I had the most painful sore throat I ever had. Was not eating or drinking for a day. Koreans must take a lot of these pills that doctors prescribe as they are speedo. I am feeling better though, despite still being sick with cold symptons. I noticed that each time I noticed illness growing on me, I had been drinkin the night before so a night of drinking may lower your immune system and allow you to get sick from all the germs present. Pollution might have the same effect too. I am not in Seoul, but NE Asia is very polluted due to industrial stuff and high density human populations. I do notice that other people are not getting sick much, such as Koreans and foriegners who have been here for at least 6 months. In fact, the Koreans I work with act like they can't believe it and are suprised when they see me having a difficulty like a common cold. They are like, "Reallly? what's with you?"

To sum it up in 3 months. I had 2 flues, 4 colds, and one serious case of tonsilitis. I am more than ready to be well. I had considered myself to have a very hardy constitution as I got sick typically only once every 2 years for the past 20 years since I had been finished with elementary school.

Foreign teachers here tell me, it's becuase this is my first time in this part of the world and it takes a while for your body to adjust to living here as to build up immunities that local people already had done when they were small children growing up here. I believe it, becuase when me and my brothers and sister were in elementary, we used to get aweful flues and colds alot, but we were OK once we got in our teen years.

Now I am ready to be OK and regain my sense of having a strong constitution as I always had before. Now I know that simply flying over here in January should not had wrecked my health. |

It was REALLY BAD yesterday. Could really notice it.

Seems to affect my sinuses. That's from the inside as well. |

A few years back my cough and sore throat were diagnosed as an alergy.

A little loratadine (Claritin in the US) takes care of the problem. May or may not be part of your issue.

Loratidine is cheap and almost completely harmless so it wouldn't hurt to just try it. One pill per day. Mine cost 200 won each.

Sinus infections may be secondary to something else that causes the mucus production such as an alergy. Finding a solution to the first issue may leave you with the second issue.

There have also been things in the news about an immune response to fungi.

On some people like me decongestants make the mucus thick and the problem worse. This is why I don't take alergy medication with a decongestant like Claritin-D.

An expectorant like guaifenesin is supposed to make the mucus thin and watery to promote drainage. |

Anti-histamines tend to dry out the nasal passages, which is why I also use a saline solution. Saline solution has been known for thousands of years to soothe the sinuses. It dilutes whatever mucus may not be moving to the back of the throat (post-nasal drip, by the way, causes sore throats, which is why a sore throat can be an indication of a sinus infection). No need for an expectorant when you take a take a more direct action.

Saline solution also destroys some of the bacteria that have infected the sinuses. |

Anyone know if it's possible to get a neti pot along with saline solution here in Korea?

Also, mods please move this thread to the approprite forum. |

The saline solution you can get at a pharmacy here. Maybe the pot too, I remember seeing those here, but not sure if pharmacies have them.

You had to go back a while for this thread! I'd forgotten about this OP. |

Yeah, I did a search on "expectorant" and it brought this thread up. I'm sure there are other people who could benefit from this info. My co-worker said he used saline solution with a neti pot back at home and it did wonders. I've spent a good portion of my 9 months here sick and I'm f--king tired of it. If I can find a neti pot here, I'll post back. |

You put warm salt water in a neti pot and pour it though your sinuses. You pour it in one nostril and it comes out the other. Do this a few times a day and you will find much relief.

http://www.alibaba.com/product-tp/111353762/Happy_yoga_Neti_pot.html This one is made in korea so you should be able to find it there.

Hope this helps |

				| Try having a warm mist humidifier on every couple of nights. My wife used to have really bad chronic sinus infections until we started using one. After three months using one she hasn't had single sinus infection. |
