|
|
Hi,
I have been scheduled to teach a writing class this semester to university students. I'm told they are likely to be fairly low level and will need help in all areas from vocabulary to grammar to structure.
Ideally I'd like a book that starts with single paragraph writing and slowly moves to three or four paragraph essays.
I'll supplement the course with my own material but I'd like a good textbook to anchor the course.
I'd like to hear your recommendations and opinions on ESL writing books which are easily available in Korea.
Thanks in advance. |

| I love the 'Ready to Write More' series. It's not flashy like some of the others, but well laid out and easy to use. |

not to derail the thread, but does anyone know of any good academic writing books for high level HS students? (Most of the kids study SAT/TOEFL stuff already)
Anyone try this book?

Title: Writing Academic English (Fourth Edition)
Authors: Alice Oshima and Ann Hogue
Publisher: Pearson Longman
It is a good book. It is kind of back to front in that it deals with sentences in the second half and paragraphing and whole essays at the front. But I just started half way through.
It is a good book and my students were already using it in other English department courses. I used it in the just past Winter school program class for Advanced Writing for students of all majors. |

Teaching writing skills to in-service English teachers here in Korea for several years found me searching through libraries to find the most user-friendly books for teaching writing.
The most straightforward one I've used was:
Engaging Writing by Mary Fitzpatrick (2005, Pearson).
It is organized around rhetorical genres and works from a single paragraph up to multi-paragraph essay.
Each chapter incorporates sample texts and language work (sentence mechanics and topic-specific vocabulary) into a state-of-the-art writing process.
It took most of the guess work out of my writing classes. |
