I've just accepted a position at a public school in Suwan.
I was wondering (and i have looked already at these forums)
If it is easy to meet other expats if there are no other foreign teachers at the school. and im not looking for a party party lifestyle. I mean, don't get me wrong I love a good party. But its not all I am in Korea for.
Advice please. Im pretty scared about moving. |

Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi province. It has all the amenities you will need to be comfortable. Suwon is not a bad place to get your feet wet. As a small city of about 1.5 million you won't lack for anything.
You are, depending on where in the city you end up, between 30-60 minutes to central Seoul for a weekend get-a-way (often faster than commuting from places within Seoul).
Again, depending on where you end up it may be easy (yeongtong) or difficult (jowondong) to meet other expats.

I live in Uman-Dong and I've seen (to put it bluntly) 2 other white people.
There is a middle eastern (I would venture from Bangladesh) guy that hangs out around my favorite chicken hof.
When I went to Yeong-Tong there were considerably more expats. Do you have any idea where you're headed? |

Hwaseo Station is one stop away from Suwon Station, which is in the city centre. You don't even need to take the train, Suwon Station is within walking distance of the Hwaseo area easily.
That being said, you live really close to the city centre and will have no problems meeting other foreigners... |

Yeah, same Uman-Dong. I live more towards the fortress. Still makes me wonder if you're the guy I see every morning. |

ive signed the contract (although ive not actually sent it back yet)
i asked if i could be put in contact with a previous teacher at the school. and my recruiter said this was not possible because they don't want me to get an influenced view on the school and want me to go over there with a fresh head.
is this a red flag, even with a GEPIK school?
ive been on the schools website, and i am aware school websites are propaganda tools, but it looks like a big school, and generally not a bad school. |

HUGE red flag! If the teacher had a positive experience at the school she'd have positive things to say now wouldn't she? I've never had a recruiter decline my request to speak to a previous teacher. Tell the recruiter you'll have to pass on the job if you can't speak with the previous teacher and/or find yourself a new recruiter bc they seem to have something to hide. You'll find another position in no time. |
