|
|
Have a friend who is a clown/comedian/magician. He performed for only children back home but lately has been contemplating coming to Korea to teach because of how tough the economy is. Mind you he has no clue how to teach nor is he that concerned about it. He told me it's because of the things I tell him about Korea and mostly from what he reads here. He told me, "Just entertain them and make them laugh".
What do you think his chances are in terms of "teaching" here? |

Does he have a degree? Is he white? Blonde? If yes to all of the above, very high. If no to the first, not likely. |

There's nothing wrong with being silly in a primary/Elementary class. |

Jesus. These guys are just trying to make a living. Teaching kids is hard work and takes a lot of energy if you want to do it well. A guy like Isaac Durst works his ass off and is quite successful I would think. He knows what the market demands and he delivers. If you don't want to edutain, then instead of hauling others down who do it well, give up teaching English conversation for kids and teach adults where you will sacrifice free-time vacation and pay. |

Note to self....learn to juggle, buy a red ball for new nose, and throw away all ESL books. |

Thank you. This guy is aiming at teaching young learners. He is no different in his approach than Sesame Street and Barney. Kids in his target audience love cheesy and goofy. This guy should be comended for what he is doing, not attacked. I guarentee you, in terms of teaching ability, learner progress and results, (in addition to pay checks) he will wipe the floor with anyone in this thread critizing him. |

I think he is great for young learners. The problem arises when NETs are forced into one niche, which then affects student expectation even at the university level. |

I broadly concur with this. Teaching methods for young and very young learners is VERY different from those methods used for older learners.
Young learners respond best to sight, sound, color, action, activity and hands on learning (TPR is great at the kindergarten and G1-3 levels).
Young learners learn best through play / roll playing what they see and hear. It puts things in context in a way they can understand and use.
There is a good reason Sesame Street has had a globally successful run of some 41 years.

Yeah really.
I don't know why people keep knocking on Isaac Durst... I mean, he's A CHILD'S ENTERTAINMENT PERFORMER on TV.
If he was in a classroom, then perhaps he'd be half-asleep, teaching from the book and then maybe, if they're good, start up a game of hangman. |
