I enjoyed True Grit but I thought that it was a shame that the Coen brothers didn't do more with it. The John Wayne original was almost word for word through a good majority of the movie. Remake a movie to praise the original if it's an award winner, but make it your own as well. I will say though that Jeff Bridges made a great Rooster. |
They are both based on a novel though, so I imagine that is why they are very similar. For what it's worth, I've heard that the Coen Brothers stick closer to the novel. |
I heard that as well, but word for word through the first 45 minutes of the movie? |

Does anyone know where to see True Grit, Black Swan, and other less mainstream movies in Korea? I don't want to pirate stuff. Is there a foreign film theater in Seoul somewhere? i know you can see the common stuff like Harry Potter at every theater on every block. I'm looking for the less common stuff.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this. For a city of 10 million there is a severe lack of independent cinemas. I don't think language can be used as an excuse - I used to work in one of the six in my city (of about 200,000 people!) and we showed Russian, French, German, Chinese etc films with subtitles.
I guess there just isn't the demand for foreign films here, aside from the generic hollywood stuff. |

I think I have some info. My quasi-girl said Black Swan will come out next month (February 20th, I think?) and True Grit will be a longer wait... she either said March or April. I think it was April.
Oh, and to the second poster/wise-a$$, that info isn't on imdb or google release dates. Thanks for the oh-so-helpful post, though.
Anyway my lady friend saw this information on TV, I think. Can't confirm it yet, but unlike what someone said a few posts ago, these are hardly arthouse films. Both have huge movie stars in them and both have garnered tons of buzz and are critically acclaimed and doing very well at the box office. True Grit hit the $100 million mark. What I'm getting at is I'm pretty sure they will come, even though I can't offer much in the way of confirmation.
Unfortunately I was told this yesterday, just after I caved and watched a downloaded version of Black Swan. Which was kind of a mind-fuk, but which I realized at some point today, is excellent.
I ain't waiting three months for True Grit, so I guess that comes tonight. |

Good news! Black Swan and True Grit both came out in Korea yesterday! Their Korean titles are 블랙 스완 and 더 브레이브, respectively.
Just thought I'd let everyone know!  |

there is a place to find non-mainstream movies in Korea, the KOFIC association regularly shows foreign & classic films on the big screen for a reasonable price at different areas around Seoul. Insadong, Chungmuro, and Myeong-dong are three.

Black Swan finally came to Seogwipo, Jeju. I just saw it today and it's the sort of great drama that rarely makes it overseas into Korean cinemas. Portman might win an Oscar for it Sunday. The movie was DEFINITELY better than 127 Hours, a fellow Best Picture nominee, though I liked them both.
I sure hope True Grit comes to town. Maybe that's a reason to cheer it to win the Oscar! It'll help its release overseas. |
