Right now I'm teaching in Thailand. My contract expires on March 25th. Basically I need to decide if I should buy a one-way ticket or round-trip ticket to the US.
IF I can find a pubic school position in mid to late April - mid May, then I will get a one way.
If I WON'T be able to find work until the next school term (August), then I'll stay put in Thailand.
What are your thoughts? I'm worried if I take a position during this time frame it will be because a teacher bailed on a bad gig. Maybe I'm worrying too much. |

You need a criminal background check. I am assuming you don't have that. So, you should try to get that and then you can try to get a Korea job.
I am thinking about the same thing, being in China now. I might go back to the states to make the process easier to finish and visit family.
Added to this, you might want to consider getting all your documents and then going to Korea. Try to find the school in Korea instead of committing out of the country. This is another advantage in going back home first. You can plan everything out the way you want. The downside is you pay for 2 flights. I think for 2,000 it is well worth it. |

Actually I've already submitted my paperwork and should be getting my background check back fairly soon. Still need the apostille though. Are you looking to work at a hogwan or a public school? |

You won't even be considered unless you have ALL your documents in hand ready to ship. That includes apostilles, FBI check with signature and seal, and diploma with apostille . |

I think hagwon would be best in my case. I want to be available for adults and children. I am not looking for a fixed schedule that public schools have.
However, there are afterschool jobs. These are like hagwon jobs, but you teach at an elementary school (maybe they have middle school too, but I have never seen those offers).
To address your concerns I think you have about public school jobs, I wouldn't worry about the timing of it. Just because a school is looking for a teacher at an odd time doesn't mean it is bad. It doesn't necessarily mean the teacher bailed on them.
Actually, I would say the problems in these cases would be more with a teacher not realizing the nature of ESL teaching life. They probably never worked abroad and decided to leave.
You should try to get photos of your apartment, talk to any previous teachers, and see what kind of schedule they have.
If it's a public school job funded by the city because of some new program they have, then it could be a rather good job. These unique opportunities are open all year round.
As mentioned before, I would go to Korea first and visit the school before I signed the contract. I signed 2 contracts with 2 public schools. At one, the principal and I signed each copy in unison, 1 page at a time. At the other school, they had me sign all copies and then the school principal gave a stamp to the school office to use as his signature. After 3 pages, they took a phone call and the recruiter stepped in to finish the job
Now, guess which school I had problems with and had to cancel working with before the contract period started?
A third signing was with an afterschool program run by an organization. They put their copy and mine side by side. Then we signed them by turning both together 45 degrees. This meant the top half of my signature was on one, and the bottom half on the other. I had absolutely no problems with that public school, but the organization I was managed under changed managers 3 times.
You can tell a lot by these signings and talking to those who are directly managing you. |

... I'm already aware of this. I am looking for information on job availability in April/May... not on paperwork
LifeinKorea- Thanks a lot for your input. I will definitely consider moving out there to find something on foot. My only concern in finding work during those months.
Thanks again! |
