Several weeks ago, I got a sharp pain on the side of my knee when I was walking down the hall at school. I had it happen once before that, but I don't know why. Now I've noticed that my knee hurts when I try to climb stairs or use the elliptical machine at the gym. The pain isn't bad, but I just get the sense that my right knee is weaker than the left and I definitely favor it when I try to climb stairs. I guess I should probably get it checked, but I don't know who to see for it. Do I just go straight to an orthopedist? Any one else out there who has had a similar problem and have an idea what this might be?

Get it checked out ASAP even if it turns out to be nothing serious.
Visit your local orthopedist(정형외과), you'll probably get x-rayed and get a short counsel, then he/she might send you to a bigger hospital with a referral.
You can go straight to a general hospital without visiting a local private practice, but then you won't be covered by the National Health Insurance without a referral.

Go to a University hospital and have it checked out: an anecdotal reality is that they are much better quality then local 정형외관s and i should know because I am recovering from a cartilage problem in my knee myself. Koreans will tell you as much themselves too.

An x-ray will only reveal the bone structure of the knee and judging by your symptoms that doesn't seem a likely cause of the issue. X-rays do not reveal ligament damage. If it continues then you may need to have an MRI scan.

Ive been struggling with knee pain for almost 10 years. You may have entered the beginning stages of patella femoral syndrome or arthritis of the knee. Patella femoral is when your knee cap is off track and it messes up your ligaments and wears away all cartilage. I have pure bone-on-bone knees now, you should hear it creak like an old solid Oak tree in the forest. Welcome to the club! I have searing pain if I squat down or raise myself onto the floor out of bed. The pain is so second nature to me since it's been present for years that I've just resigned to the pain. I've yet to see a doctor about it. Well, I did mention it once while there at the doctor's office for a different reason, and he told me to do strength training for my quads, since your quad muscle is the one attached to your knee which should help rehab it. The bad thing is there's no cure for patella femoral syndrome or arthritis OR degenerative joint disease which are all possibilities to our problems with our knees Sad Well except for a knee replacement but that only last for 10-12 years until you need to get another one. Kinda sucks don't it?
I hope I didn't scare you, get it checked out like the others said for peace of mind.
Good luck to you and your knees!!

I had a similar problem. Once, out of nowhere my knees started hurting. I went and got it checked out at SNUH (near Hyehwa station), and they ran some tests and told me I had arthritis in both my knees. I am supposed to avoid stairs and hills, lose some weight, not carry heavy things, not do squats, etc. They gave me some exercises to do. The crappy thing, is that I would have liked to ask the doctor a ton more questions, but the doctor didn't really want to explain much (Koreans tend to not ask doctors a lot of questions).

Anyway, knee pain could be serious and should definitely be checked out. I've got patellofemural arthritis that Radius described above (kneecap off track and wearing away cartilege). I've got old lady knees that can sometimes predict rain now. The arthritis in both my knees is mild (according to the doctor), and sometimes it doesn't hurt, but sometimes it hurts quite a bit. It really sucks, and it's not going to get better, but at least I can try to make it not get worse as quickly as it might otherwise get. Honestly, I usually avoid going to doctors for stuff cause I dislike it, but I dance and my knees hurting freaked me out enough to go. The doctor said dancing should be fine (thank goodness), but I still dance less than I used to now.. Sad

Take care of your knees. They are important!

I have a bit of arthritis in the knee from an old injury. My mom also had knee surgery last year. Her dance-instructor friend turned her onto Noni drinks, so she sent me some in my last parcel. As new-age hippie as it sounds, I've noticed a big difference. Far more than the glucosamine complex that I've been taking (though that stuff works on my hips, so I won't be stopping it).

By all means, go to the the doctor. You should always have things checked out. Still, try Noni juice as well. I got my second bottle at the foreign food market. I can't remember the price, though it wasn't cheap.

Is it on the outside or the inside of your knee?

I had a heavy bike fall on my leg and injured from my knee down to my ankle. A year later, it started hurting very bad when I tried to start working out again. I went to an orthopedic doc and he shot my knee with injectable synthetic cortisone they injected mine into the area of inflammation. It hurts. I won't lie. It does hurt. For a while...I could feel soreness for two weeks. But it helps.

By the way Radius, the accident caused that kneecap to go off to the side. The doctor tried to sound optimistic, but it was clear that he was holding back. He didn't tell me what they call it either.

Guys...start cycling asap. The muscles built will support the patella and relieve the pain.

I think actual arthritis is still on the distant horison for most who have thusfar posted. Even when all cartilage is gone, whether erosion or surgical op, it takes awhile before arthritis makes its presence felt.

I've had bone against bone in one knee for years already after a no holds barred op, and nary a sign of arthritis. There again I do an impossible amount of cycling which keeps it at bay.

Usually the pain is sudden if it's cartilage, in consequence of been worn paperthin with the patella not tracking so great from slightly bow legs or other. One day you're doing a common garden routine activity and the next thing it just tears in half with no warning.

Avoid the knife. The doc can't tell you apriori how much cartilage he's going to zap. It could be a 2 day affair, it could be a 4 month saga.

We're talking crutches, we're talking can't work long time, hors de combat.

Just be positive and ignore the now and then twinges. Unless I'm very much mistaken you won't need your knees when you're dead.

I drink 30ml a day (some need as much as 60ml).

I have arthritis early because I was born a preemie. My hips were dislocated, and I was handicapped as a young child. When most kids were learning how to walk, I was learning how to sit up because of the makeshift cast holding my hips in place (3 diapers). On the bright side, I was talking and devouring books at a very young age. Over time, I overcame my handicap and was able to rollerblade, run, and participate in martial arts. Still, my joints are weak. I had a skating accident when I was a tween that required a lot of physical therapy on my knee, and that knee has improved a great deal from the noni juice. My mom was raving about it after her friend turned her onto it, so she sent me some. It seems to have worked a good 60% or so. My mom was limping and shuffling, and now she can dance on her Wii fit and is able to go hiking again.
