I'm gonna attend a friend's wedding party in Tokyo and would like to get a hotel near the venue since the party will extend late into the night, but it's in obscenely expensive Ginza. So I'm thinking of just cabbing it from the venue to my hotel but what kind of taxi rates can I expect?

Thanks.

how far are you going?

The fares start at 710 for the first two kilometers, and the taximeter then adds 90 every 275 meters.

Not sure how far but I remember in Fukuoka that I took a cab back to my hotel from a bar, and it cost around 1,000 yen for something that would have cost 3,000 won in Seoul. Shocked

Stay up until the trains start running!

Worst case scenario: find an internet cafe. Those are something like 500 yen an hour? Anyway, private cubicles and they often have showers.

They might be scarce in Ginza though.

perhaps look up a capsule hotel?

not being facetious, just trying to throw out options. tokyo's a big city. to put it into perspective, i once took a taxi from downtown osaka to a suburb (usually a 45-50 minute express train ride, i think the taxi was in the 20-30 minute range but this was awhile back) and that was about 15,000 yen. i could see going from one end of vast tokyo to another costing similar.

Taxis are insanely expensive.

Where is the hotel?

If you are seriously considering a taxi to a hotel not in Ginza...it'll probably quickly eat up or surpass the difference in hotel prices of the other versus Ginza.

Late night taxis are one of those things that Tokyo people seem to avoid at all costs. Streets seem so empty and quiet after the last train, unlike Seoul.

The first time I went to Tokyo, I made the terrible mistake of taking a taxi from Narita to my hotel in Tokyo, the fair was about $280 US. Great way to start a vacation.

The story about the $400 taxi ride into Tokyo is pretty infamous.

Rails run until midnight in Tokyo. Cab fares for a few hundred US$ are commonplace. At 11:20 you'll have to make a tough decision to stay out all night or go hop on the subway/JR.

Odds are any money you save on hotel will be quickly eaten up by a cab fare.

I lived in Tokyo and never took a taxi.

Looking at the map, Hibiya or Ginza-itchome may be good options for a hotel and should be walkable.
