Normal to use it (or a copy of it had you been smart enough to use one instead) = YES.

Are they likely to hold it hostage = also yes.
Wait a week then ask for it back. If they won't then put up a stink and quit teaching (sit at your desk) till you get it back.

Next time use a photocopy.

They do need to register it at the ministry of education office, but it was not necessary to give them your original - a copy would have sufficed. The education office would have made a copy and returned the original immediately. Your employer should have the original and if they say they dont, they are lying.

As a backup plan, go online, order a new degree/diploma from your school just in case. Some schools only take 1 week, while others take 4-6 weeks.

It's like $20-$50

Classic shady hagwon move. Never, ever give your original diploma to ANYONE. They will use it as ransom.

Five bucks says that it will be damaged if you get it back at all.

My recruiter is also saying the same thing. That I need to bring the original with me when I get on the plan to Korea. Would I be able to just bring a copy instead? Or do I NEED the original?

Bring it, but never let anyone put their hands on it. If they say it needs to go somewhere for something, say 'Sure, but I go with it or you can take a copy.' That also means YOU make the copy. IT NEVER LEAVES YOUR HANDS or there is a good chance you will never see it again.
