The overreaction at UCLA is typical. Yet violence by blacks against Asians in SF and Philly receives little national attention. Some girl makes a youtube video and the nation is supposed to stop for a Teachable Moment.

I agree with this guy:

I agree with the links, too. It disgusts me that the media only chooses to label white as racists. And because they do, is the exact reason why many whites start becoming racist. They take being called the only ones who can be racist and finally lash out (when we fully know black people can be or are the most racist people in country--my own views, which I'm sure is shared by many.)
Again, I still believe that the media EXPECTS white people to be above the racist nonsense hurled their way because deep down everyone knows we run the country and are above anything the "puny black or asian person" can say to us. That, in it's own sense, is racist.

I was one of those 'Asians in the library'. Well we we were predominantly Asian, but yeah, we sucked. During our H.S. days we took over the local college library to "study" by being loud, half-doing our homework, leaving spilling soda and pizza, possibly being under the influence, taking up the study rooms to do whatever in, and playing Starcraft. During finals week we had a massive Starcraft tournament and all you saw was a bunch of predominantly Asian high schoolers playing Starcraft on the engineering computers.

If I was non-Asian and I had to deal with that on finals week I'd be pretty ticked too.

It was great because some of our white/black friends would get props from their parents "Oh look he's going to study at the library with those hard-working Asian kids. Good for him. Of course you can be out past midnight dear."

Stereotypes can be great when you manipulate the system.

I wasn't talking about ESL teachers. I was talking broadly about the use of that kind of rhetoric when ever a thread pops up about racism.

Some of the responses to her video are just as bad.

To be honest, I think they're worse.

She made a few slurs (probably because of stress)-- and now her life is pretty much ruined. She won't be able to finish her education... all because she said out loud some things that a lot of people probably think about all the time... and that means people of every race, about other races or things that they don't understand. But hey, this kind of thing always gives people a chance to get all indignant and go on and on about their superior morality.

Posting a video on youtube is a really stupid idea anyway... there's a disturbing trend to make superstars out of people whose 'behavior' makes others feel more intelligent, more edgy, more hip, morally superior, whatever... it's a really sad and perverse direction for society when this kind of thing takes off.

I really don't understand why people feel the need to show their faces online like that anyway. If she had come to Dave's and posted a thread about it, she probably would have gotten away with it.

What I think is interesting is that you say to turn off the tv once in a while, but modern American television consists primarily of programs which reinforce the very ideas you're posting here. If anything you should be encouraging people like mises or Steelrails to watch more tv, as the material therein generally matches your world view.

and, asia does something to foreign white guys- not all, but a lot. they build up some sort of pseudo-confidence like they are hot sheet, whereas back in the states, they were just another chump like everyone else. but then you meet people who have been here for a few years and they are more down to earth and can often times be really cool people.

Um...I was hot sheet in the US and I'm hot sheet here. I tumble dry on high. I also use Snuggles fabric softener so even though I've been hot sheet all my life I can be down to Earth and cool.

Also, I am a closet geek but people seem to accept that I beat Starcraft 2 in one sitting.

The truth of the matter is that most minorities in the U.S. don't like white people. Especially children of immigrants.

Face it, some groups just annoy you.

White people are in a weird position where they cannot say anything about anyone.

Let's have an honest discourse on race for once in our lives!

I think we could be friends. I'm so tired of being "held down" by minorities. I have met many, many more minority vs. white people than white vs. minority. I had a South African friend say to me"I like Lauren Hill, she is beautifully racist." Seriously? And NAS "He is getting back at the man!" 50% of the world is man. I did nothing to minorities and I give respect to people only if they are deserving of it, regardless of race. I don't care what color your skin is if you are a douche, an idiot, a xenophobe, or a hypocrite that is on YOU; it is not racist for me to say it. Your race is not responsible for your actions. Strive to be better and you won't have to fall back on "entitlement" and "the man holding you down" and "racism". Reverse racism is rampant in America, and some minorities have an undeserved sense of entitlement. Frankly I am tired of it.

Grow up entire population of Mother Earth.

No, no! Affirmative action...no need for that. Diversity, you say, oh no. That wouldn't change the way people think. Laughing

Just poking fun...

Well, part of the 'guff' that you said hostness had written was the point that you can't claim to have experienced what it's like to be a minority *in the West* just because you taught ESL in Asia for a year or two, and it's a fair point.

But I agree that the old line 'you'll never understand because you're white' is way overplayed.

No.

I dont see a difference in the crap they had 20 years ago, and the poop they shovel now. Your worldview is almost consistant with it. Stereotyping at its worst, gender-stamping , etc.

As for this thread, there is rampant racism against Asians in the west. I'm surprised this video (which is mild) has been so explosive.

Google 'nip-tipping' in Canada. Far more serious and violent.
