JIFF 2004 to run from April 23 - May 2
The Jeonju International Film Festival, held in the southwestern city of Jeonju, is scheduled to hold its fifth edition from April 23 to May 2.
Opening the event will be the world premiere of local film Possible Changes, directed by debut filmmaker MIN Byung-guk. This independent feature is an experimentally-tinged film about the changes that people cope with in life. The festival's closing film, meanwhile, will be the Spanish film November by Achero MANAS.
A large number of special sections and retrospectives are lined up for the event, including "Discovery: Cuban Cinema" and an "ATG Retrospective" devoted to independent films from Japan. A wide variety of contemporary Korean films will also be shown, many of them in outdoor screenings.
In addition, the festival will screen its annual digital omnibus work which it commissions from three well-known Asian directors. This year's filmmakers are YU Lik-Wai, BONG Joon-ho and IISHI Sogo.
Festival director MIN Byung Lock said that the festival is striving to establish more of an individual identity in this year. Programmers KIM Eun-hee and JUNG Su-wan have assembled a wide range of films that are seldom screened in Korea, and which seek to explore the issue of "What is Film" and the festival's slogan "freedom/ independence/ communication."
More detailed information about the festival and screening times is forthcoming on the festival website http://www.jiff.or.kr
*This is my favourite time of the year, spring, warmer weather, and JIFF!
