I have recently noticed a few jobs ads that 'prefer' someone already in Korea. It seems to have taken employers a long time to realise that someone already here / who has stayed here some time is more reliable / more experienced. I guess soon we'll see more ads wanting people with F visas so they don't have to bother with paperwork - end result - F visas give you more power. What do yo think?

And the people who actually come to korea to first before taking a job (which seems better to me than signing a contract sight unseen)

I don't think hakwons would prefer people with F visas. As you said, F visas give you more power. Hakwons don't want you to have power. They want you to be stuck with them. They like the fact that you can't get another job easily if they don't meet their promises.

J.B.
Thats an oversimplification.

The point about the F visa is quite valid and it is probable that many schools would opt for teachers with those visas.
Its not all about the hakwon having "power" over you.
Many times its about wanting to hire a quality teacher.

Of course the lower end, fly by the seat of your pants hakwons won't go that route but thats their choice.
In any industry there are various levels of quality and this applies to hakwons too. Very Happy

There are pluses and minuse about it for the schools:

Pluses:

less paperwork
an F visa holder is more stable and much less likely to pull a runner
an F visa holder has more ties to the country and wont just go nuts and leave. Even legally, since hes got a family to support.

minuses

there is much more freedom. It is much easier to leave a school legally. An F visa holder has a strong base of support, emotionally and financially and so cant be so easily manipulated and controlled. An F visa holder has been around here for a while and knows the ropes.

Doesn't someone with an F visa still need an E-2 visa to teach?

I am pretty sure one does. An F visa only allows a person to live in the country. It is not permission to work.

F2-1 visa. You get it by marrying a Korean.

Enables you to add things like e-2 etc. Means you can take whatever job you want and that a company doesnt sponser you. Essentially you can cancel whatever E-2 you put on there whenever you want. Since the primary visa is F2-1, you don't leave the country. Just get another job.

...

Let's say you are married to a Korean for 50 years and he or she dies first. Does the expat spouse have to leave the country after so long?

I would just like to point out the obvious than a F visa holder generally is already in the country, and that means they can come down for an interview instead of the school being forced to hire blindly.

I thought it was only if the Korean was a property owner and you had been here for more than 7 years?

You thought wrong. This is curious. Why would you question someone who obviously has one and is telling you the facts?
