If so how do you like it? Much to do? Seems like a big enough city, not far from Seoul.

I live at Suwon Station:

-Plenty of bars, one decent club (Tao) but I don't attend anymore.

-World Cup Stadium has nice Bluewings soccer games.

-There are lots of places to eat out whether you want western or Korean. Also TONS of coffee shops.

-AK Plaza has some pretty good shopping.

-Subway is only an hourish from Hongdae, take the 3000 bus to Gangnam (40min-1hr)

Suwon has some good cultural sites:
-Folk Village
-Hwaseong Haenggung (palace)
-Paldalmun
-Hwaseong wall/fortress

-Galbi Festival

-Decent outdoor market.

Anything I am missing?

I live in Suwon, 20 minutes from Ingye-dong on foot and 30 minutes from Hwaseong Fortress on foot (5-10 minutes to either place by bus). 15 minute bus ride to Suwon Station.

I'll be honest, I don't particularly like it here. I've found most of the foreigners in my area quite cliquey and unfriendly. I go to Seoul almost every weekend and have my social life there.

That being said, Suwon is convenient enough. There are grocery stores, shopping malls, Korean food, Western food, movie theaters, bars, and things to do. There are certainly worse places to live.

It is a lot better than Hwaseong to the south. I have been to Suwon many times but never liked it much.

Yes, there are worse places.

When I wanted friends, it wasn't very hard to make them. They only seem cliquey because you didn't try to speak to them. There is also a couple Suwon facebook groups.

I am moving to Anyang in September but I have enjoyed Suwon. Also, there is a CGV and some arcades if you're into that.

Actually, I really like Dongtan. It's a nice area with plenty to do and friendly and chill expats.

As for the the rest of Hwaseong, though, I completely agree with you BoholDiver. You couldn't pay me enough to live out there.

im from dongtan, been here 2 years. its beautiful and still very friendly and clean. I see plenty of foreigners here but then again i dont really mind talking to many people but not out of spite but simply because im a church body so im always busy with that. ^^

suwon is eh ok, its not bad but not great. as far as AK plaza its pretty overpriced for things, but that is how all AK plazas are, although sometimes you can find really good deals on clothes (you have to be proactive in searching and shopping). But i just think suwon especially near the station is too noisy and too dirty. lol

but its up to you to choose if you like it, because its different for everyone. il stay in my nice comfy dongtan lol

Actually, I did try to talk to people. I went to bars and talked to people, checked out the Facebook groups and went to events, and the teacher at the school next to mine introduced me to people whom I talked to. Most of these people hardly gave me the time of day, and didn't seem to appreciate a stranger "intruding" their group. I'm not saying that everyone in Suwon is like that. I'm saying that I've happened to have met a lot of people in Suwon who are like that. One of the friends I did make here, who is now living in Seoul, also had experiences similar to mine when trying to make friends in Suwon.

Glad to hear that you're fitting in, though, Triban!

I myself am moving to Anyang in June.

I live in Suwon, and have no complaints. Not many foreigners in my neighborhood, but the ones I have met are pretty good people.

Suwon has stores and restaurants. It's also a transportation hub so you can travel all around Korea.

sallymonster, what meet up / facebook groups did you try? i can't seem to find any. i've just moved to the area by the world cup stadium (i can see it from my apartment) and i'm trying to meet people. your experience doesn't make me very hopeful but i'm going to give it a go anyway.

am also currently joining your meetup group, i may see you at the hiking event Smile

Well let's check facebook and the like; most of my friends have moved back to their respective countries by now and I could use some new friends as well! Plus it's spring and I'm looking to crawl out of my cave!
