| According to the CNN video you can link to via MSNBC, the man "entered North Korea in November", but they don't say how or why, beyond mentioning that other Americans have snuck in across the border. Possibly yet another evangelical Christian jonesing martyrdom, but that's just my speculation. |

Could it be that Jesus told him to go save North Koreans? That's very American. The USA is prone to religous wackery. It tends to influence the mentally ill in the US especially. |

The last two Americans to go in, not counting the two journalists, were that Gomes guy and, before him, another Christian, both intent on converting Kim Jong Il. The first guy, as I recall, explicitly stated before going in that he didn't want to be rescued, but then relented. |

This guy was a Korean American, they said on CNN.
They said he had a business visa for South Korea or something along those lines. |

I'm taken to understand that the border between NK and China is quite porous, whereas the one between NK and SK, pretty much airtight. I would assume he didn't go via that route. |

If you'll please excuse me for the slight derail here, but I just saw some real American Religious wackery. I was walking around town this afternoon and saw these five trailers driving down the street that warned that the World was going to end on May 21, 2011. It's guaranteed in the Bible, you know. No joke! So I felt compelled to google May 21, 2011. Apparently, there is a fellow by the name of Harold Camping who has it on good authority that the World will, indeed, end on May 21, 2011. So, I suppose, we should all prepare ourselves.

Even the military go hungry, so it's awfully easy to pay off a border guard with $100 and get across. |

North Koreans are suffering under an extremely oppressive dictatorship. They are, and have been, in dire need of help. For someone to become concerned with this, know the risks associated with crossing into North Korea, and still take action he believes will bring more international attention to the plight of North Koreans is not crazy. It doesn't matter if his religious beliefs drove him to act on his concern or not.
I just wish these guys had the courage of their convictions and would refuse any outside aid. |
