I've used calling cards before but isn't there a number that you can just call? I'd like to use my mobile instead of being tied to my computer for a chatty call home, but I don't want to spend more than I have to.

You could check out the rates for 00700 as a gateway number to call. This should give you a much cheaper rate than just dialing normally. There might be cheaper options out there, which you could research or ask around about, but this one is not too bad in a pinch.

This number uses your local minutes, so there's no hidden fees, no extra charges, no phone cards. It only works for the U.S, but includes Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, and toll free.

It also works for some other countries, but mostly China and a few countries in Europe. Sorry Aussies, Kiwis and Canucks.

This one is very similar..only uses local minutes, and allows you to call more countries. 1688-4949.

I have been using this one for over a year now and and have never seen any hidden/extra charges. On the link page, the first group of flags you may call those countries with either a mobile phone or land line. The lower group of flags you can only call to those countries from a land line..however ALL flags displayed can be called only using local minutes.

OK..so i just added info to the thread. I wasn't trying to say my number was better than yours..relax haha

Obviously the OP is asking for info so was likely unaware of any 1688 prefix at all...I simply gave one that gave more countries (including Canada, England, Australia, NZ, Ireland) for the benefit of the OP and any others who may stumble onto the thread and may not know of the service. I didn't check your number out, but posting in an ESL forum a number to call more countries than the US and its territories seems like helping out the overall community.

I appreciate you clearing that up. However I never said anything about free, and like you, specifically stated that it charges local rates.(well..actually I said it uses local minutes, meaning the allotted minutes we get with our local plan)

Admittedly I have never used the number to call any other country other than Japan and the US and have only been charged local rates. If there is some fine print on the site that says calling other countries like the UK or Ireland for example have some other "extra" charge beyond local calling charges that they do not charge when calling the US, well that is beyond my knowledge.

I would assume based on the website that calling any of those countries would only charge local rates (as we both said, ), but I have never done so myself.

Set your Gmail to English(US) setting and you have access to Google voice for cheap calls.
