I just returned from Thailand this week. I spent 2 months traveling around Thailand, Laos and Cambodia and 1 month on an island in the south . The last month on the island I spent about 1 million won and wasn't really watching my budget. I think it could be done for less. I ate all my meals in tourist restaurants....that was about 65-70% of my costs. I also was using satellite internet at least an hour a day...which really added up. I hope to do it again for a longer period next year at a much lower cost. If you stay in a bungalow for a long period of time you can ask for a discount rate. Also, I don't drink alcoholic beverages regularly....that makes a big difference.

If you budget 1 mill/ month and you have 5 mill then let me think..... 5 months. If you get caught up in hookers and beer then let me think..... 1.5 months. Have a good time. Surprised

I'd probably be an idiot and spend it in less than 3 months.

i used to live and work in bkk. i had a decent pad with cable and air-con not far from a sky train station that cost me 8,500 baht a month. beer bought anywhere but your wetsern style rest. is dirt cheap as is eating on all your side of the road rest like thais do. it's the best food and the cheapest.

down south i'm not sure about pads. but it's monsoon season between may-sept. so i wouldn't recomend it down there anyway if it's sun and fun you'r after. but bkk is generally more expensive so bank on a monthly rate being a bit cheaper.

and where in the south do you wanna go? i wouldn't recommend phuket but it's whatever tickles your fancy. you can rent in krabi town for example for dirt dirt cheap and it's a great boat ride each day on the longtails to raileigh or ao nang.

so it depends on a lot of factors but if you're thinking of going for 4-6 monhts make sure it's at the right time of yeasr. i.e from november to march

I was in Bangkok with that much money over the winter, maybe just a little more. I was drinking beer every day and going out at night, just a bit of traveling to Chiang Mai. It was almost 4 months before it ran out. Maybe I could have lived cheaper, but when I first arrived that wasn't my plan.

I guess that makes me ALMOST an idiot, huh? Grrr, see if I ever buy YOU another beer, jaj ...

I spent 3 months travelling Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. I was spending $AU1000 per month on food, transport and accommodation. Back then aussie $ was worthless so it was about 22,000 Baht per month. This didnt include beer of visas.

From what I can remember:

Street vendor meal: 20 baht
Bottle of water: 5 baht
Room: 100 baht (most times shared bath but sometimes own bathroom for same price)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Interesting to see such a wide spread in costs between travellers. I'll have to research more. I wasn't planning on living like a king but not toooooo cheaply - I'd say I'd like to stretch that much money for 6 months if possible. It seems highly likely as long as rent isn't too high. I didn't realize the rainy season was coming though. When is the best time to go to the island. I want the sunshine and blue skies.

Yeah I was thinking the Philippines as well. For one, beer is just a fraction of the cost. I tend to drink a lot more beer on vacation. Thailand would kill me in that expense.

Also, you can stay in the Philippines for up to six months at a time.. whereas Thailand I believe its only 30 days.. although you can arrive with 60 days for the first stint.

Thai food is much better though.. but expense-wise.. Philippines would be better.. particularly if you could rent a place as hotel-hostels seem to be a bit more there than Thailand.

Hmm.. either place would be good though!

As an aside, anybody take a vacation in Thailand, then hunt for and land a job in Korea from there?

Yes, my bad.

Oh yeah. I've heard good things about Bai (or Pai) up north, if you want laid back. Haven't been there though.

I think 1-2 dollars is a bit of an exaggeration for a simple chicken curry. Maybe more like 3-4 dollars.

Oh yeah and the bottled water is going to run up things a bit.

$1-2 thats 40-80 baht. Depends. If you eat at the places Thais, do outside, no English (the best food though) a 100 baht goes for like 3 dishes. If you eat in 'farang' resturants Curry will set you back 100-150 baht. That Air Con is expensive. Actually eating at local places is one of the best ways to save money, and is one of the only cheap things the wife and I do in Thailand regularly, the food is just better. Be warned if you do eat at them, you will often get served fried rice (they guess its safe). If you're brave just oint at different things on the menu and see what you get.

Buy the cheap bottled water to help too. Evian? Get out of here. If you stay long term, you can have big bottles 18L brought to you for like 15 baht a bottle (if my mermoy serves), saves a some money but really is just so convient, I hate carrying a bunch of heavy water bottles home, I'm on Vacation.

Beer is cheap enough. You'll find local brew (which is good) for 50-100 baht in lots of bars.

HAND Smile
