I'm starting to get compliments on my recent weight loss and although I have not been very methodical about it, I have been working on it since the first of the year. I joined a gym and started going pretty regularly. I felt better and made an almost miraculous run for a bus one Saturday but I didn't lose much weight and I started losing motivation. Then came Lent.
To celebrate Lent this year, I decided to join Not For Sale's Fast For Freedom and send the money that I would have spent on lunches each day to charity. I wasn't going to the gym and I was pretty low-energy at first, but I started losing weight and as I became accustomed to the routine and the weather got better, I became more active; walking home from school on nice days and such. I will probably start taking a salads to school after Easter but I will not go back to those Korean public school lunches. The last time I joined the other teachers in the cafeteria, it was some sort of fried pork. The last thing I need to put into this body is deep fried bacon! |

| I'm finally losing weight by keeping calories at or under 1000 a day, although eating as many fruits/veg as I want, so... maybe I'm eating tons of calories that way, but I doubt it. I've lost about 2 kgs in a week. Woo! |

This is almost as close as my diet. I load up on the greens, though. I also eat a few less carbs than it seems you do and beans/nuts are a major source of my proteins.
Cardio is sooooo under rated. You have to do it if you don't want a spare tire or thunder thighs. Thanks for the continued inspiration, JMO. |
I actually kind of think cardio is overrated. I do it if it fun like tennis or golf. When i work out though I lift weights. In terms of a spare tire, that is entirely a case of calories in and out for me. |

| This diet is also know as Feast or Famine, there is a lot of information about it online. I gave it a try, seemed to work well. |

Golf, cardio?
Actually, I think cardio is quite important. I mean it in a sense of continuous, sustained activity that keeps your heart rate up.
Examples: walking to and from work, jogging, ult frisbee, chasing your kids around all day, basketball, footie, sex, etc.
Running on the treadmill/eliptical is for people that have too much money to spend or think that they'll melt if the rain gets them wet. Do some jumping jacks. I just don't see how only lifting weights can burn all the calories consumed if that is your ONLY source of 'cardio'.
When you're(not you specifically) 50 and you can't walk 10 flights of stairs because you fall over with a heart attack, it may then be realized why it is important. |

Its very simple if you know your weight/height and activity level to stay thin whilst doing zero exercise. Weight is calories in/calories out. There are foods that are better for you to eat and there are times when it is better to eat those foods. I lift weights to build muscle and become stronger. Having more muscle mass makes it easier to become slimmer and I like to be strong. Also heavy squats/deadlifts etc will work the heart. In fact they work your whole body if done correctly.
Golf in Ireland is normally played without a cart. I carry my bag so its basically a 3 hour walk punctuated by small stoppages. If something is fun to me I will expend energy to do it. In terms of improving your health, I think lifting weights is where its at though in terms of efficiency.. Couple that with a good stretching/flexibility program and your physique/posture/fitness will improve in leaps and bounds. I'm talking about big full body lifts, not individual body part stuff. |
