| I just started with a school that I don't feel comfortable with. I'm in my second week on the visa and I was wondering what my options were for switching jobs? |

| Midnight runner or you'll have to a get a LOR from your current job, that's pretty much it. I doubt that after 2 weeks they'd let you do that, though, so the first option might be your only one. |

What's my visa status with a letter of release? Also couldn't I just turn in my ARC card at the airport, come back on the same day and start the search for a new job here? |

You can only transfer after 6 months, so an LOR would be useless to you.
Do you have an ARC already? If so, then yes, you could just hand it in when you leave at the airport. But then you'd come back as a tourist. You'll need another set of documents to apply for another visa. Then you'll do another visa run to Japan. Alternatively, head off to Vietnam or Thailand and do a bit of freelance teaching while you're waiting for a new visa issuance number. Get your next visa at a Korean consulate/embassy where ever you're working and then come back to Korea. |

After two weeks? Unless it's truly horrendous, I'd suggest you might want to give it at least until the end of the month... Firstly, because then you'll get your paycheck. Secondly, because it does take some time to settle in to a new culture/country/job. 2 weeks is not long enough really to make an informed decision.
What about the school is making you feel uncomfortable? Is this your first Korean job? Where in Korea are you - Seoul? small city? back-of-beyond town? Have you made contact with other foreigners in your area? - Sometimes just having someone to vent to over a beer every now and again can make problems seem much more manageable...
If you can give some more details, people might be able to offer more advice... |

My first kiddie hagwon job, I wanted to flee sssssooooooooooo bad,
but I needed a job and stuck it out. It took more than a month to figure out what I should be doing and longer than that before I found things that actually worked a bit. I think it was about 3 months before I started to get into the swing of things. By 6 months, I still loathed the job, but at least I had some idea of what I was supposed to be doing.
By the 9 - 10 month mark, I was enjoying some of the classes and enduring the rest. I even agreed to stay on a couple of extra months by the end of the year.
Don't expect it to get better overnight, it takes a while.
If it's your first teaching job, do some reading;
David Paul's "Teaching English to Children In Asia" is a good start.
Pray often. I was quite surprised at how much better my days went when I remembered to do this. |
