|
|
So I was out the other day with a friend of mine near Hyehwa when some creepy middle-aged guy in a burberry-type coat and sunglasses asks the person I was with which school she went to.
She started saying that she wasn't a student, but I stopped her and asked him why he was asking... he then strongly told me to not talk to him, then started muttering in Korean about 양공주. I was going to get into it with him a little more, but I thought about the person I was with and decided to just move on with a dismissive wave (thanks for teaching me this, Korean Culture - I love it!). He finished the exchange off by pointing to his sunglasses then pointing at me. Classy.
I was a bit amused - but the girl I was with (she was actually my gf's friend) was pretty shocked.
He's pretty easy to spot - for some reason I got the impression that he was wearing his harass foreigners uniform .. So, anyways - if you run into that dude, stay clear. It's probably not worth the trouble. (I also wanted to take a picture - but again, didn't really want to deal with that guy any more than I had to.)
Anyone else run into someone similar? |

양 = sheep and 공주 is princess HOWEVER in this context when you say that it means "a foreigner's who-re" (had to use a dash because this forum puts the word BEEP in anything remotely cussing lol). Huge insult but then I think the OP is a foreigner in korea so this guy was trying to either belittle him or start a fight. |

Can't yang also mean foreign? I think 양식 is often used to mean foreign food (as opposed to 한식), and though I know it's not the same always, in China yangren (洋人) means foreigner. I assumed 양식's 양 was the same character derived from the same hanja... |

Obviously you didn't understand the OP. Sorry if I used too much Korean for you.

Yeah, except for the sheep part (as has been stated, the root hanja for 양 in this case means 'foreign' -- think 양복 (western-style suit)). In Korean slang, he was basically calling my friend a foreigner's *beep*. He seems to fit the profile of one of the more devout members of the AES group.
As I said, we were just walking together - normal distance apart, not holding hands or anything. I have no romantic relationship with the girl I was with - so this was completely unprovoked.
My Korean is more than good enough to be absolutely sure about his intentions.
I was a bit shocked, honestly. I thought these kinds of people were mostly the figment of Dave's hysteria .. but these sorts of people are out there. However tempting it may be, I would suggest not to escalate the situation and move on.
Anyways, I thought that by sharing my brief encounter I would make people aware that there are these kinds of people around and there is the potential for trouble. No need to be paranoid about it, just be aware. |

There is a man from that area who has been in trouble with the police for more than one incident where he verbally attacked foreigners, and at least in once incident, he became physical. He has had to pay fines, it's been so bad.
At least two professors from a nearby university have been verbally attacked to the point where police got involved. The man went ballistic on one professor (a true Ph.D, no less) for having lunch with the female office staff member who helps foreigners get set-up in their jobs. He made a public scene, screaming that this foreigner was dating his students, or something to that effect. Somewhere in the process, she mentioned her job and what she does (to try to calm the guy down) and I kid you not -- HE WENT TO THE SCHOOL and made another scene in the office! Police became involved, and the Korean officeworker was planning to sue.
A similar thing happened to another teacher on the subway when the foreigner was chatting with some Korean students of his. Said foreigner called his K-girlfriend, and she came down. They all spent quite a bit of time at the cop shop, and the Korean man ended up having to pay a fine because he acted so rudely to the police.
It has been confirmed that the same Korean man was involved in both incidences.
If anyone has the same troubles, please snap a picture of the guy and REPORT IT! If it's the same guy, it needs to go on record. Again!
Some research has been done and it has been learned that this Korean man is actually employed as a matchmaker for a Korean company. His real name is known to the foreigners who were involved, as it came out when the police became involved. In one incident, the police asked the foreigner what should be done, and the foreigner got a signed statement drawn-up where the guy stated that he would not do this to foreigners again.
It is because of this, I sincerely hope that people bust this guy again, if it's him. |
