Last I checked, it wasn't illegal to download music off the Internet. |

Occasionally I do that, and if I like what I find I usually purchase a legal copy. I buy illegal DVDs in Korea and then by the legal one if I like the film.
It's wrong and so was recording all my friend's Led Zep albums on to audio casettes way back when. It's just easier to do it now.
I don't think that type of file sharing or pre-programmed radio listing should be allowed. Make peope work for those illegal copies!
I'm surprised at how easy it is to buy illegal DVDs on the street here. I never buy Korean films. Is it just as easy to purchase the new Korean films as well? |

Then why are people paying for it? Are they just not aware of how to download music for free? |

Perhaps because some people just like to make sure that artists they like get some of their money. |

Well I used to download tons of music files, until I discovered a little peice of software that allows me to record streaming audio straight from a url into mp3's or WAV files. I'm working my way through the Yahoo Launch RnB catalogue and will soon have to buy another hdd ... |

We can purchase music. It's not all done through donation.
How can I legally obtain illegally copied music? It's not illegal to take possession of the files? Hmm, maybe? |

Perhaps you are unaware that many countries have legalized the non-commercial distribution of music. You'll note that there has not be a single case yet that has found anyone guilty of downloading music.
In fact, the only court decision that you'll find was from a court in Canada saying that uploading music to a P2P network was legal, and this decision was preceeded by a decision by the Canadian Copyright Board that declared downloading was legal. There have been no other court vedicts.
To get "illegally copied music", you are going to have to head to country actually prohibits copying and does not recognize the concept of fair use (such as New Zealand or the UK), and then download while you are there. Even then, it might be legal of such laws have not withstood any challenges to them and may end in their being struct down.
But while just stop believing the RIAA and friends' lies about what you can do with music, why stop at just their lies on downloading? Remember that driving with the windows rolled down in your car is illegal, that loaning our your CDs is illegal as is buying or selling of used CDs, you have no right to make a backup of your music CDs to listen to when in the car, and if you lose that backup CD which you weren't suppose to have in the first place, then you have to buy another CD as losing the CDR was the legal equivalent of losing the original, which is also strange since they say you are buying a licence to the music and not the music itself so it shouldn't matter. |

No, I'm not aware of the laws concerning non-commercial distribution.
I am assuming that it is illegal to copy music and then distribute it without permission of the copyright holder. |

The only court decisions on the matter, and the laws themselves generally, say it is not. |
