I'll agree that the food is pretty good! I had pretty good Mexican food there. Although the time there was marred by this jackass from Louisiana I was eating with:

Him:"How can you say it's good Tex-Mex food if you've never been to the USA?"
Me: "Have you ever been to Italy?"
Him: "No."
Me: "How can you comment on Italian food if you've never been to Italy?"
Him: "........"

Sigh. I despair of people sometimes haha!

Services in English though...I'm good without. I'm living in Daegu and don't have much of a problem with anything. Luckily my vice principal is on top of things if I ever have any major issues or need to do something that I can't communicate/resolve myself. But, then I know not everyone is that lucky!

Some things I want to do in English, though regardless of what level my Korean is at.

For example, going to a Korean cell phone shop is a nightmare because of the language and because of the fact that they've probably never had a foreign customer before. They'll probably tell you that you can't have a contract phone and that foreigners can only have card phones because it makes their life easier.

When I went to Itaewon, it was no problem to get set up with a Galaxy in under an hour.

Also, for doctors/dentists... It's better to have these services in English with doctors who are used to dealing with foreigners for quite obvious reasons.

Wouldn't be surprised if those teachers had a better command of the English language than you do.

As for me, I'd rather go to Itaewon than Hongdae for example. I'll take GIs with ass-hanging pants and booze-wreaking teachers over hordes of obnoxious young Koreans any day.

I'd rather go to neither and hang out with people that have grown out of that scene.

metalhead...erm excuse me? Obviously forum English is a lot different from classroom English. No need to be snarky and unpleasant, is there?

myenglishisno - I agree with you.

What Itaewon needs is to get rid of those old buildings that stand for no reason and truly make itself like a Lan Kwai Fong a la Hong Kong. The impending demolition of Hooker Hill is a welcome event and hopefully the rest of the run-down old joints will be torn down as well.

I disagree. I think the won was a lot better back in "the day", talking '91~'96. Much more laid back, more of a street party on the hill. Maybe I was just younger, but it was much better....

It was a total dump, plain and simple, but hey, some like yourself obviously like that.

Yeah, I only caught the tail end of that in late '96. Dump or no dump, it has never had that kind of energy again. Some say Itaewon peaked just after the Olympic Games when it was considered the Kangnam of Seoul nightlife. (I know some are going to deny that - but I've heard it more than a few times).

It's better in many ways now - especially during the day. There was just a certain something back at the time that's not there anymore. Maybe even a good thing ...

I've seen a few comments where people are getting a little too sharp with each other. There are different strokes for different folks.

have a good one...

Before Itaewon got a subway station, gosh, it WAS a dump. Just a few bars and eateries where expats, GIs and Koreans would get drunk. The number of fights between Koreans and expats (mostly GIs) was quite high. I remember jwaseok bus #773 was my ride to Itaewon from Sinchon.

That said, Itaewon still has a lot of room to improve considering how many old and decrepit buildings remain there. A Lan Kwai Fong-type of atmosphere would be nice.

So, when was that subway station opened and how did it change things (obviously for the better)???

It opened in 2001. Whether Itaewon has changed for the better is certainly debatable. I also doubt that access by subway in itself changed Itaewon at all.

dont know why people hate itaewon or get so worked up over the place, if you dont like it, dont go there, there are plenty of other places to go.

i like it, its gotten a lot nicer over the years, heck i remember when the nashville steak house was the only decent place to eat etc. now the variety is great.

the bars aint bad if you stay away from the hill which i do, 3 alley, sam ryans, scrooge are fine with me

also its the only place in korea where i can find clothes in my size

tbph i dont care hongdae, too crowded and too young for me but i dont go bananas over it

Itaewon needs major renovation. It's gotta be a major disappointment for tourists.

Also the area near Kings club is really really grimey, that's like the rapist's haven

I think it depends why you go. I go there for What the Book and Subway. That's it. Don't go drinking there, so don't see the odd people who seem to come out only at night. Every once in a while it's ok, but I certainly wouldn't go there every weekend, maybe every couple of months.
