I'm having a hard time finding a decent job. Well, anything that pays over 2.1 to start. And a job that doesn't require me to be thee from 1-10. I should mention I have been in Korea for 4 years. Are all jobs like this now? I'm wondering if I shouldn't cut my loses, cash in my pension and head off to China.
Thoughts?
Thanks. |

| China sucks. And no, not all jobs are like that now. In fact for being Korea 4 years you should be able to get a sweet afterschool gig easily. You're there already and have the experience. What's the hold up? Aren't you trolling craigslist, worknplay and Dave's? |

Going to have to agree with RMMC here: what are you dsoing asking these questions here after 4 years in Korea?
Surely you have a few contacts and can find good jobs through referals no?
I mean in 4 years you must have gotten some idea of the lay of the ESL land and on how to find the better jobs no? |

Sure I have been hitting up all the old recruiters, old contacts, friends, worknplay, daves job board. you name it. I'll send in my resume and a picture-I'm not hideous , old or fat, and then I won't hear back. It is almost like they want someone with NO experience. So they can take advantage of them?
Where are these after school jobs you speak of?
Thanks. |

I see tons of them on Dave's, and worknplay has numerous after school jobs that are for current E-2 visa holders. I'd say I see at least 5 or 6 a day that are for people with experience or hold an E-2 visa.
I dunno what to say, try to get a better looking picture maybe? |

| There are a lot of great after school jobs out there. I'm the same, been in Korea over 4 years. I just decided to switch jobs from hagwon to after school. Found a great one, just signed the contract. From start to finish my job search only took about 2 weeks. The only place I looked was on WorknPlay. I found it quite easy.... sorry to say. |

Yes, I am finding work difficult. I think I need a vacation.
Seriously, cash in your pension, load up that backpack and shuffle along to the next trough. |

Best advice yet. Fours years in Korea is way more than enough. Move on.
Worst statement on this thread is "China sucks." Oh really? You are so full of "knowledge." |

I figure that most people who don't start an M.A. program after the second year in Korea must be nuts for not getting out by the 4th year. Working at hagwons for the rest of your life is for the birds.
I mean, if you're gonna be in Korea that long, you may as well get paid loads and work decent hours. |

Thats useless.
Korea does not suck nor does China.
People can do well in either place depending on what they want, need and on what the qualifications are.
Four years in Korea MAY be enough for some people, it may be just the start of a good run for others. It would be foolish to be categorical in your judgement of either place.
I did extremely well in Korea for 11 years, some of my friends are there still (8, 9, 10, 15 years on) and have done exceptionnally well. Some are married locally while other are not.
Conversely, some people I know worked in Korea 3-5 years then moved on to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shangai and are very happy with the move.
It is really up to each person.
Wad is happy in China...good for you man.
Some people will not be happy in China just like you had had enough of Korea. Personal choice, personal preferences.
As for the OP, I just think that after 4 years in Korea a person should know enough people to hear about the better jobs out there without having to resort to using recruiters. All that experience has to pay off no? |

| Yep. At some point one has to take stock of the situation. If you are going to stay, then improve your lot; a grad degree, a good uni job, etc. Heck, shoot for the F5...that opens a lot of doors. |

I think that the people who have lived in Korea longer than 4 years would take issue with that kind of statement, considering most of them are perfectly happy spending the rest of their lives there.
And as for China? Gee, I can't imagine why living in an insanely polluted country, quasi-3rd world country where the foolish heads of state openly condemn free speech and internet usage would suck. Mao Zedong rules, am I right guys!?!
Alright, maybe China doesn't suck but their social policies do, and are enough for me and most people who enjoy freedom of thought to avoid the place. |

It's the wrong time of year to find a good job in Korea. Wait another month or two.
Just bad timing. |

Both Korea and China have their good and bad points. I could not say with any
enthusiasm that they suck. If anything they have given a good comparison of
teaching methodology and culture. |
