One of Japan's flagship ramen chains is coming to Korea!

http://www.ippudo.com/index.html

My friend said it's set to open on the 28th. I'm camping out for sure!

I'm under the firm belief that good Japanese food cannot be found outside of Japan. If you disagree, you have terrible taste and/or have never been to Japan.

I doubt it'll be as good as in Japan, but one can only hope!

I tend to agree with this. But there is Samurai Noodle in Seattle. (I have lived in Japan and my co-teacher was a connoisseur of ramen and took me to all the good places. I became really picky about ramen after that.)

Hopefully, Ippudo isn't severely modified for the Korean palate the way pho and "Chinese food" has.

You've probably never had a good bowl. Scratch the probably.

I've been to all the supposed best ramen shops in Seoul and they're all absolute GARBAGE. Every bowl of ramen I've had outside of Japan has been nothing but disappointment (I've included ramen stops in all my travels--anywhere that has garnered significant attention).

I'm guessing there are VERY VERY few exceptions--Momofuku in NYC comes to mind.

And I'm not sure how overpriced the ramen is. It's typically about ~10,000 won for a s***** bowl in Korea, and I'm guessing Ippudo won't be charging much more for it.

I will never forget the time my school's head chef told me Korean instant ramyeon is way better than authentic Japanese ramen.

People may tell you otherwise, but take it from me: the answer is NO. There is one ramen-ya in Hongdae (across from the children's park) that everyone talks about but it is, you guessed it, crap.

So the Ippudo is set to open in Apgujeong! My friend saw it and it's currently covered up in tarp which only reads, "Ippudo, coming soon"

Where in Apujeong? Not really that great with that area. Much appreciated, and glad someone else is privy to the awesome that is a real bowl of ramen.

Apujeong = ground zero for plastic surgery in Korea.

not the best location considering most of the traffic in that area. Exposing your freshly-stitched face to hot steamy ramen after plastic surgery is probably not a good idea.

Ippudo in NY is pretty pricey though. i paid $14 for a bowl of ramen when i went last year, so who knows how much it'll cost in Korea.

Some of the better places in the Los Angeles area where I'm from include Santouka (salt-based ramen and probably the best ramen in LA), Hakata Shin-Sen-Gumi (hakata-style tonkotsu ramen) and then there's Daikokuya (which is decent and wildly popular) and these places charge like $6-8ish for a bowl...

Funny you mention those. Haha, I went to school in SoCal and I've been to all those places. Hated them all. It was more disappointment than actually horrible tasting food. They just didn't hit the spot. And I hate driving in LA... so... yeah.

Still, they were all mediocre (to me).
