Hi,

Have had a couple of nights out that have involved drinking a lot of Cass and to a lesser extent OB Blue and Max.

Especially with Cass, it drove me mental. A different drunk to anything I've had before. I'm a seasoned drinker and have had never had a problem with being drunk but one night on Cass/other Korean beers, I found myself getting a bit rowdy. Never happened before with other beers.

Does it have a strange effect on anyone else? Even when getting drunk, I was getting a different kind of head spin than normal type of drunk. Just thought the beer wasn't the cleanest. Felt like it was full of chemicals.

Anyone else think it's like fumes?

If so, is there any Korean beer that doesn't provide a dirty kind of drunk feeling?

I had some Max one night and that seemed ok but I didn't have enough to be really drunk.

Always check your beer snacks first before drinking.

Sorry. I don't understand.

Is it true that Alley Kat/Cat tastes like Sierra Nevada, IPA? I love that type oeer.

If so,

How much is it?
Can you get it in Seoul?

Finally, what's the cheapest beer that you guys would recommend? Cass is definitely out anyway.

Thanks.

Alley Kat is hoppy in a land of very few hoppy beers. It's around 6k most places that I've been to in Itaewon. Dunno where else it's served.

Korean beer can get me a little rowdy, but usually just bloated. The worst is firewater. It's pretty much everclear that tastes like those hot fireball candies. Deadly stuff, stay away.

I've cursed Korean beer as much as the next guy, and said the same things you are saying now, but you know what? Two years and six months into my 3 years there, I got used to it.(not joking)

On a side note, alcohol is an insidious drug. Even seasoned drinkers who never had a problem for years and years can suddenly develop into problem drinkers.

Back in Canada, there is plenty of good domestic stuff - especially microbrews - and more excellent import choices that you can shake a stick at. However, compared to Korea it is as expensive as hell to enjoy a few pints at a bar. I've been back a few times over the last couple of years, and whether you're at the 3 Alley in Itaewon or your local chicken hof, you don't have to pay more than 3000 won a pint of OB, Cass, Hite, or one of the other local offerings. With tip, a Guinness, Stella, Warsteiner, or Fullers on tap is going to run you more along the lines of 9000 won per pint. A domestic draft might be a buck cheaper. If you buy beer at a store, it isn't necessarily more expensive than in Korea. Sometimes it is actually cheaper. Korean beer isn't great, but it isn't all that bad, and good bang for the buck.

Anyway, back to the issue of Cass - or any other Korean beer - messing one up more than other beer, I think not. (This is based on plenty of primary research, I can assure you.) However, and getting back to the cost of beer in many establishments, one can overindulge in local beer without it being a crippling financial experience. I've also heard of people claiming Korean beer produced worse hangovers than other brands, but I think this has more to do with: urban myths as to what chemicals are - or were - used as preservatives in Korean beer and/or poorly maintained (in other words, dirty) draft beer lines.

Soju is a Korean beverage I learned to stay away from after a couple of genuinely loopy experiences. I might have a cup or two with any variety of Korean grilled pork - it never fails to put a smile on my father-in-law's face - but otherwise I avoid it like the plague.

No, I like that lemon flavored Cass. But the soju will tear you a new A.H.

.

not even close. Ally Cat tastes like piss.

I find that the major problem with beer in korea (other than it all being the same) is that they have no idea how to do proper tap maintenance and often, especially in the summer, beer will come out tasting of mold and just skunked to all hell. That could be what is causing your problems, I know that it does for me from time to time.

I have to disagree with you on that one. Korea has the worst beer in Asia. Try Beer Lao, Tiger, Asahi and you will realize how poor Korean beer is. The more recent releases such as Max and the new golden OB are steps in the right direction but they still fall quite a bit short.
For great bang for buck go to Emart and get some of the Belgian beer that costs 1,500 for a tall boy.

It's been pointed out that Korean brew contains chemicals to improve color, shelf-life, etc. There's a reason why it's damn cheap, and it's not just 'cos its local. Come to think of it, it's overpriced considering what you're left with.

OP, aren't you the same guy who posted the thread about waking up with a hangover, a severe case of constipation, and a sore bum?
