I would assume that MLK would have been greatly disappointed in those that did not take advantage of the many opportunities in America today but modern day American blacks are/were heads of America's biggest companies (TimeWarner, Merrill Lynch), been joint chief of staff and even President. There are plenty of successes.
Also, I don't think there is one 'black culture'. There are 40 million blacks in America, from all socio-economic backgrounds, and culturally as well. I would suggest a black guy from Philadelphia, Pa is as different from a black guy in Philadephia, Ms in the same manner as a white guy from both cities. We have this monolithic view of 'black culture' which I think isn't so, just like there is no monolithic Italian American, Irish American, Gay, Jewish or Latino culture as well |
No, there is a general Black American culture.
Granted, diversified......well............yeah, I would say that a Black American family who lives in Montana has a VERY strong chance of being quite different than a Black American family living in....lets say....Philly?
Why would that be? Really and honestly, all of my fellow Americans of color pretty much act the same where I live....

Sorry, I didn't understand what you meant by 'general similarities'? I asked if other ethnic or racial groups of size have the same monolithic cultural qualities you said blacks have and I couldn't gleam an answer from your response. |

Think about it....think really hard.
But were are not talking about OTHER racial or ethnic groups, are we?
American Black Culture, as a whole.

I did think about it. That's why I asked the question and made the prior statement.
Values: Middle and upper middle class blacks who grew up in sububan America (mostly white suburbs) have the same values as some inner city black guys living in poverty?
Lifestyle: An ambigous word but I would suggest in my example a black guy from Philadelphhia, PA would not have the same lifestyle as a black guy from Philadelphia, MS. They don't have the same environment. Its regional. The same for two white guys from both areas. For instance sports, in the deep south football is the game of choice and in Philadelphia basketball. Foods would be different. Weekend activities because of the choices each would have that would be unique to one and not generally available to the other. Slang would be different. Made a bit more accessible with music but the accent and slang amongst all blacks I would think is not the same over the country.
Racial approach/agenda: More similitaries than differences but it would be the same for most jews, most latinos but I tihnk there would be differences though socioeconomically. The vast majority of black conservatives seem to be from the middle and upper classes. Black republicans tend to be middle and upper middle classes and the poorer blacks almost entirely Democrat.
Social norms: not sure what that means. I have an idea but will confess to not knowing in what ways you mean it.
Not having a go at you. Just disagreeing on what I think is an over generalization. Also, I don't want to imply any kind of racial bias on your part as well. I just think its going to be very difficult for 40 million people of any ethnic or racial group in a country the size of America, with all the regional differences we have, with the various socio-economic differences and living independently of each other to share an homgogenous culture. Even amongst the poor. The crips and bloods gang culture was particular only to the Los Angeles area for instance and I would think it was as odd to a guy from Harlem as it would be to most people. Fighting over a color of a shirt I would suggest at the time would be odd to anyone including blacks from other areas of the country.
I do see your point thought but think its easy to fall under the generalization trap. From my personal experiences I've found a range of different personalities, values, etc. from different people within the same ethnic/racial group. |

The interesting thing is Koreans I know who visit the bars where teachers hang out say they see a generalized behavior of the teachers they view even thoguh the teacherrs are often times of different ethnic groups and different countries.
Actually...........I think America's youth of today, pretty much acts the same. |
