The Asian tourists that love Seoul love it for the same reason why people like amusement parks. You get your thrills for a few days and you bounce. You don't want to live in Disney World for a month you'll probably get cabin fever and kill someone.

Seoul is undoubtedly a tough place for most foreigners to live for a myriad of reasons. But is this the only way to judge how good/bad a city is? I dunno, for some people it is.

But Seoul is not designed to be comfortable for foreigners who want to stay here for a long-time. It's designed to cater to the basic superficial tourist who wants to have creature comforts they may not have back home, shop, and spoil themselves.

I personally don't think Seoul that great of a city, but there are tons of places that are much worse to live in.

I'd say this is a very obvious take on things. It does however underline the point that Seoul is essentially a very superficial place, as LA is.

Its almost impossible to function in LA without a car so its readily available as a stauts symbol. However, I will disagree on what it takes to look cool. Its so diverse.

In NYC, if a guy goes to a cafe in Soho or such similar neighborhood and he's a white guy who has long hair, tattoos, worn jeans, old t shirt, etc. or he's a black guy with baggy pants and a hip hop look, they may get disrespeced or be made unwanted. However, those two guys show up at a cafe on Melrose Avenue in LA and they are treated better. Why? You never know who has money in LA. Those guys could be a multimillionaire rocker or rapper. You run the risk of pissing off Slash or 50 Cent.

I also disagree on the post about you either have sophistication or you don't. You can acquire it. You can learn the right wine to go with beef or fish. You can learn the difference between a salad fork and dinner fork. You can learn proper dinner party etiquette. While I do agree that you don't have to go London or NYC to learn those things, you're more apt to learn it there than in Des Moines or Boise.

Finally, even the status conscious cities of LA and NY, you can be cool without money. Cool is also about how you carry yourself. Being comfortable in your own skin. Wearing what ever you choose to put on and doing it in a way that excumes an air of being unapologetic and don't care what people think. Its confidence. Its how you carry yourself.

As far as Seoul, its symbolic of Korea in general. Its homgeneous. Blindfold someone and put them in the middle of NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Miami and they'd know instantly they were not only in different places but could tell what city you were likely to be in. Do the same to someone using Seoul, Busan and Daegu and you'd think you didn't go anywhere. ALl the cities look remarkably the same and with a very few exceptions look the same. Someone made a good point that the city was built for Koreans. NYC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco oftentimes builds things to distinguish itself and builds for the world at large outside their city.

#29. Cable channels devoted to online gambling

I think that's meant to be online gaming considering gambling / online gambing is illegal for Koreans.

Whole article has got to be one of the poorest excuses for journalism I've ever seen.
