I don't know if you need to step in here. The girl and him were fighting about something, he hit her but it sure didn't look like she was hurt at all. She kinda goes looks like she might hit him at the end of the video.

If the girl was getting beaten up, or looked really scared, then I'd "jump in." Here she mostly just looks angry.

There is also the sense of worthlessness that accompanies not acting when you should have.

Contrasted with the sense of worth you get from stepping in to help.

A lot depends on the situation. If its between a couple then there is less inclination to intervene I think. But if its someone being assaulted by a complete stranger...its imperative to help out.
This is the view the Korean police have as well so i gather.

The only reason you should intervene is to prevent imminent physical injury to an innocent or helpless party, not because your sense of self worth needs a boost.

If you see a husband chastising his wife and getting a bit slappy, walk on. Not your business. If he is choking her or hitting her repeatedly with closed fist, intervene to distract if you can, and then slip away once the violence is no longer imminent. Either way, just do what needs to be done and go on your way. Your sense of worth should not rest on the actions of others. All this talk of sense of worth, honor and cowardice just confuses the issue.

I was (and am) thinking the same thing. I guess news for most people here includes things that happened nearly 1/2 a year ago....Shocked

I'd be embarrassed to even post it. Embarassed

Well there is also another thread with a child being hit by a Korean teacher that is far older. I sense an agenda.

That's nothing, ever seen male and female middle and high school students play that 'hitting' game with each other? That can get pretty viscous.

I imagine it can, once the blood begins to dry. Smile

Where's the anger? Where's the rage? Oh, that's right, they weren't foreign and sitting on the floor. Hypocrites.

Exactly. This is not unique to Korea. Recently, 75 people, including first responders, watched as a man slowly drowned over the course of an hour:

An apparently suicidal man waded into San Francisco Bay on Monday, stood up to his neck, and waited. As the man drowned, police, fire crews, and others watched idly from the shore.

Why? Officials blamed a departmental policy, stemming from budget cuts, that prevented them from jumping in to save him.

Fifty-year-old Raymond Zack spent nearly an hour in the water before drowning. A crowd of about 75 people, in addition to first responders, watched from the beach in Alameda across the bay from San Francisco as Zack inched farther and farther away, sometimes glancing back, a witness told the San Jose Mercury News. "The next thing he was floating face down."

A volunteer eventually pulled Zack's lifeless body from the Bay.

Mike D'Orazi of the Alameda Fire Department said that, due to 2009 budget cuts, his crews lacked the training and gear to enter the water. And a Coast Guard boat couldn't access the area because the water was too shallow.

"The incident yesterday was deeply regrettable," D'Orazi said Tuesday. "But I can also see it from our firefighters' perspective. They're standing there wanting to do something, but they are handcuffed by policy at that point."

Alameda Police Lt. Sean Lynch also suggested his men did the right thing. "He was engaged in a deliberate act of taking his own life," Lynch told the Mercury News. "We did not know whether he was violent, whether drugs were involved. It's not a situation of a typical rescue."

But at a City Council hearing Tuesday night, some locals expressed outrage that Zack was left to die. "This just strikes me as not just a problem with funding, but a problem with the culture of what's going on in our city, that no one would take the time and help this drowning man," said one resident, Adam Gillitt.

The city said it would spend up to $40,000 to certify 16 firefighters in land-based water rescues.

One witness to the event told a local news station that Zack was looking at people on the shore. "We expected to see at some point that there would be a concern for him," said another.

Do I really need to spell it out? Guess so

A Korean guy hitting his wife or girlfriend or woman does not reflect negatively on foreigners here. That said, I don't see anyone defending the guy.

The subway people...well yes their actions do reflect negatively on us.

No don't thank me, I was happy to help.

I think that the guy you quoted was saying "Why aren't Koreans upset about this particular subway video?" and implying that they weren't upset because it didn't involve foreigners. I think you misinterpreted his post.

Thanks, Tatertot, glad someone has some reading comprehension skills. I didn't think the Urban Myth could actually think outside of his apologist box. Urban, guess I don't need to thank you after all.

From what my wife says they were arguing because he had touched her up on the subway, 2 important aspects of Korean male culture captured here in just 30 seconds. BINGO!

Then maybe he should write more clearly. From his post it was not clear at all to whom he was referring to...Koreans or foreigners. Given that he was writing in English on a board devoted to foreigners...it was a completely plausable assumption that he was referring to apologists as well. And the later remark only reinforces said assumption.

Foreigners act like dickheads... they deserve to be ridiculed. The subway thing definitely deserved to be outed in my opinion. They are in another country representing their own nations. Just like if some Nigerians came to USA or whatever and did some stupid shit on the subway there. You'd talk shit about them too.

Also when Koreans act like dickheads, they deserve the same.
However... this is a different culture and society, and we as westerners may not agree with many of the things here and think it is backwards. But in the end it is their country.
Its just like Arabs coming to America and saying the women should cover up... different perspective on whats right, but its not their country.

And on a personal note.. this wasn't too bad... because the hits weren't full on strikes.. But one of the things I hate the most in this world with a passion is a man who hits a woman hard... slap or fist... so I would personally react. its not about ego boosting...

All it takes is to step in between them (yes you are not minding your own business... that is the only major issue) but then the other person has a choice, to walk away or just shout at you, or hit you for standing in between. If he does so, when you have done nothing physical... he has hit you! period!... so you can report it if you want to take it that way or you can react in defence.
(yes its very simplified, and conflict situations are never that simple, but it basically works)
