Sending home is generally the same headache regardless of what bank you use. Go into the bank, get a teller, go through the same paperwork, hope your money gets there.

I've had three banks and the one that was the most incompetent for this was Shinhan ... So yeah, it's all good but avoid Shinhan.

With Citibank, you can send money home through Internet banking - no need to go to the bank, fill in paperwork, etc.

And as regards Shinhan, I encourage everyone to reject that bank with its prejudicial, non-sensical foreigner-only rules, and the cynical PR exercise it runs in the form of the Gwanghwamun 'global center' and its associated Facebook page. Stay away at all costs.

Re: Citibank...

I'm trying to end a three-year relationship with Nonghyup; right now, I'm trying to choose between Citibank and KEB.

As per the international check card (issued upon joining, right?)--can this be used to purchase goods on, say, an American online retailer?

I've banked at Hana Bank for quite some time and have no complaints other than after years of going to the same branch they ask to see my ID for even the simplest of transactions.

One thing no one has mentioned is that a lot of banks went under during the IMF crisis and you should choose a bank that's safe. Not all are.

Asking around is one good way. You could do an Internet search as well.
