|

For NET's:
1. University Professors
2. Publc School teachers
3. Hagwan teachers
Overall do you think that hagwan teachers are the lowest on the totem pole in terms of how they are viewed as teachers/individuals in Korea by Koreans? |

By Koreans who don't know any better, probably. I wouldn't take that to heart too much if you're a hogwon teacher, or feel justified in lording over hogwon teachers if you're not.
A hogwon teacher who sees the same classes of 12 level-tested students every day probably has more opportunity to make a difference for their students than a foreign teacher dealing with lecture halls of 40+ mixed ability students in a once-a-week compulsory English class in a public school or university freshman English program.
As a foreigner, you don't really fit into the Korean pecking order anyway, so why lose sleep over it? |

That's a totem pole? 3 levels? Really?
I look at it more like a plane seat, you want window, aisle, or center seat? Doesn't matter, we land or crash together. |

I work at public schools and don't think I've met anyone who does corporate work, but where would they fit into the equation? |

I like this
We are all on E2 visas; there is no totem pole. |

Non-esl work is viewed as much higher. Top actually. I do some side non-esl work and respect level is pretty high if they believe you.
Then University which is highly regarded(at least as fa as ESl work goes)
Then international schools and foreign language high schools(koreans know some of them).
Then Public school.
Then Hagwon.
Student is somewhere in the middle. I don't think they hold a opinion of students other then "Have fun in our country!Your Korean is better than an other foreigner I ever met, bye bye!" |

A good FLHS, say Minsako or Daewon, would be higher than any university, unless one were an actual professor, doing research and teaching six hours a week... |

Not in the eyes of a Korean. Someone working at Yonsei or SNU would trump that anyday of the week and twice on sunday. Korean people do not rank based on objective factors, they rank based on overall public reputation.
Those highschools WILL come in ahead of many private smaller universities outside of Seoul...but not ahead of big name Unis. Period.
I reiterate the person who said that any job which is not English teaching would get a higher reputation amongst Koreans. I was told to get a non English teaching job in Seoul by an ex girlfriend as this would be 'better'. |

I'd agree with this. I had a friend who went from working in a hogwon to being a copy editor, basically cleaning up grammar and spelling mistakes, for one of the English dailies. He made 1.5 a month and lived in a hasukjip because it was all he could afford. He said Koreans were still more impressed by this than when he worked for a hogwon in Gangnam. |

Ha ha, that's a good story. If it bothers people being teachers so much why don't they just lie when they meet new people? I always lie about how long I've been In Korea to avoid the 'why don't you speak Korean?' question. I just tell everyone I've been here two months so they'll leave it alone. |

This, outside of room salon hookers and people you meet on the street looking to impress you before they ask you for help with something English or travel-related. |

Well there is worse:
I look indian......so sometimes folks assume I'm a studewnt which is pretty good.
At worst they look at me like a paki 3D worker and won't give me the time of day and tell me to get lost. |
