I am going to Puerto Galera with a few friends. I would like to hear of others experiences.

Where did you stay?
What would you recommend to stay at? Why?
Where are good bars?
Where/what are good restaurants?
What are the best activities to do in the day (besides diving)
What are good diving tours/places to dive?

THANKS

I love Puerto Galera. It is a very quaint, friendly, and scenic vacation spot. My favorite place to stay is in Sabang. Sabang is a bunch of hotels and restaurants and bars all mashed together in a small inlet. There is really no beach there to speak of, but a short 20 minute walk will take you to Coco or La Laguna beach. I recommend going without making any reservations. It is usually not necessary. I couldn't for the life of me remember where I stayed.

Now there are also other options. There is also White beach. White beach is a village just down the road, about 30 minutes, where the resorts are very close to the beach, however, it just doesn't have the same feel as Puerto Galera. It mostly caters to Asian tourists and locals. If you prefer quiet and romantic then just down from White beach is a beautiful resort on the beach called Sunset at Aninuan. It is very stylish and affordable.

Google is your friend. There are many websites that list virtually all the hotels in detail. You didn't say if you want backpacker or luxury digs, but they have both.

Puerto Galera, while beautiful is SMALL. After less than an hour of wandering around you will have found every bar, restaurant, and dive shop. There is a decent little nightlife there.

Diving IS the main daytime activity there. If you're not a diver, there are probably better locales in the Philippines. You can always hire a boat and hop around a few of the small islands and enjoy a picnic/bbq. Otherwise lounging on the beach is about all there is to do.

I went two years ago and left unimpressed. I stayed at white beach, and while i wasn't being harassed by the locals to buy some cheap crap off their arm i was getting ate alive by mosquitoes (summer 2009). The beach is in fact sandy, and not crowded.. There were about 3 or 4 restaurants and/or bars there so it's not that big. You have to take a jeepney from the ferry port to get there.

The highlight of my time there came from when i rented a motorcycle (cheap if i remember) and just cruised around the area for a whole day.

anyway, good luck.

i'm interested in going either here or boracay (for the 2nd time). however, i have very little interest in diving. i might try it out of curiosity, but i don't really want to spend a short five day stay taking lessons.

I'm sorry but these comments are ridiculous.

Puerto Galera is on Mindoro, an island which is 20 times the size of Borocay. There are more things to do on Mindoro than Borocay, you just need to explore. There is diving, hiking, fishing, boat tours and tours inland. There are several indigenous tribes on the island and lots of stunning scenery and spectacular waterfalls to see. It is true that Borocay has a much better night life, but Sabang has it's fair share of bars and restaurants and it feels far less crowded than Borocay.
