Long story short: last winter my school said I could go home early after winter camp (1pm), because I was teaching 25 classes a week instead of the 20 mandated in my GEPIK contract. Lo and behold, the first week of March we are talking about summer vacation/camp schedule, I tell them my plans (this is my second year= extra 10 days, plus rural, equals 35 total) taking 3-4 weeks off to travel. The VP laughs and says 1 week. That I used vacation during winter camp because they were half days. After talking to the coordinator, she did not help and said technically they did not have to offer the vacation days stated in the contract. Wondering how many people out there have had there school offer half days for camps, and then come back and say that you used vacation? What did you do about it?
To me this was the ultimate two-faced maneuver. Still I have only used 7 days last winter (plus the 10 days they say the half days amount to). Now They say I can take two weeks, 10 days. That would still only be 17 of the 35 the contract I and they signed states I am entitled to.

There are many schools around the country or local education offices that only make you do half days while others desk warm. But it's unofficial and doesn't count as vacation time. They didn't tell you that this was part of your vacation. Had they of told you, you might have made different choices. If you fight it, you will prob have to desk warm in the future. But if the time off to travel is more important to you, then stick to your guns and don't back down. They can't change the rules without telling you in advance.

Were you getting paid extra?

I was doing extra classes unpaid on a similar agreement; short camp. But then after the first term, summer vacation, they didn't follow through. So the second semester I said "you screwed me before. Either you pay me extra or I won't teach them." They said; we don't pay you but we want you to do your duty. I said no. Next year I switched schools, and they replaced me with a Philipina.

They just tack on 10 more for a second year?

Can you post the EXACT conditions in your contract that give you 35 TOTAL days of vacation. From what I am seeing, it should be 20.

"Article 14 (Paid Leave)
1. The Employee shall be entitled to a paid leave for a total of twenty (20) working
days
during the term of the employment. Paid leave shall be taken at any time
when school is not in session and be divided, and must be approved by the
Employer at least fifteen (15) days in advance. The weekends (Saturdays and
Sundays) and the Korean national holidays do not count as vacation days. If the
Employee renews the contract, up to seven (7) days of unused yearly paid leave
may be rolled over to the new contract period. This carried over paid leave may be
used in the new contract period, but it may not be rolled over into any subsequent
contract period.

4. Regardless of the number of days over which the paid leave falls, eight (Cool
accumulated hours of paid leave shall be counted as one (1) day
. This includes
tardiness, early leave, and other absences during the work day and/or half-days of
paid leave. A total of less than eight (Cool hours will not be counted."

under the gepik contract, if you renew with the same school, you are entitled to an extra 10 days of vacation time in your second year (used in the first 6 months) as part of your renewal bonus and im assuming his school is rural so they threw in an extra 5 days vacation as incentive?

Exactly. In any case, I'm not staying at this school, so the VP will have to deal with the consequences of his ruined summer camp. I will let all know what happens when I use the vacation days I have, despite my school.

my vacation days are pretty much the one thing that is completely non negotiable....

I don't care about camps, special schedules, programs, etc.

vacation = time away from Korea = sanity
