Hi there,

I have a couple of questions. Firstly, public middle school, started late in April with a contract running up til the end of next February. Contract is only 10 months as they like late starters to finish the same time as everyone else. I started late as the previous teacher left suddenly and it took some time to fill the vacancy.

Now, I also had to sign a waiver with SMOE that means that to avail of the contract completion bonus, I will have to renew next February for another 6 months til August next year. So, put simply, I will have to work 16 months in order to get the bonus instead of 12 as the first contract is not a full year.

First question: Could I change school next February and still get the bonus in August? i.e is the bonus thing dependent on me staying in THAT PARTICULAR SCHOOL for the required time or does it require that I am part of the SMOE system for the required time?

Second question: Whenever I do complete a contract with SMOE, how easy or difficult is it to change school within SMOE? I will complete my contract in this middle school but would like to teach elementary for my next full year contract i.e. after August next year.

A guy I know said that it's difficult to change school. So would I have to leave Seoul and go to maybe Busan in order to change school but stay public? I thought that once I completed my contract it would be easy enough to change school, no?

Third question: Is it possible to get a pay raise mid-contract? For example, if I do a tefl course during my contract, can I get a pay raise during this contract once I complete the course?

Thanks for reading.

There should be something in the contract that stipulates mid-contract pay raises. Usually it would be based upon you obtaining a TESL certificate - if you don't have one already.

GEPIK contracts had a stipulation in the contract for that when I worked for them.

Getting them to give you that raise though after completing the certification will probably be a nightmare. Unless you have a good school.
