I'm an American who wanted to teach at a summer camp in Korea. Over 2 months ago I began the application process which required me to get my degree and FBI check apostilled... Well I still don't have the FBI background check in hand, and even if I did it seems impossible to complete everything on time. I called for information on the apostille process and it's insane!
First I need to re-send the background check to the FBI to get it departmental seal, then get the diploma notarized, then certified by the clerk of court, then send it to the local state authentication office to get apostilled. As for the FBI background check, once it comes back with the seal I need to send it with a cover letter to the US State office to get apostilled.
There's no way I would have completed this on time.
Everyone goes through this process? |

As of a few days ago, I FINALLY completed the process!!
When they say you need around 3 months to complete the process, they mean it! I had to leave Korea in April due to the new laws, even though I had been living in KR for 4 years!
I have a Bachelors and Masters degree from 2 different states-I had to travel to both states to have the degrees(copies) notarized IN PERSON-each state has slightly different rules, but for MI and PA, you have to do it in person, no one else can do it for you and you can't send it in.Then I had to send them to the Sec of State office in each state the degree was issued.
I received the apostilled copies within a week after sending them to be apostilled.
It's the FBI CBC that is the real pain. Once I received the CBC from the FBI(which took 2 months) I had to send it back to a different office to be apostilled-it takes 15 business days for them to do this, not including
the mail time.
This is ridiculous because most jobs want the CBC to be between 3-6 months old, and it took 2 months for me to get it back!! |

Only Americans. All the other countries have a more efficient system to get it all done.
Or did you mean the requirement to have an apostille? If yes, then yes.
Everyone except the Canadians (who have not signed onto the treaty) need the apositlle. Canadians have to have theirs certified at the Korean Consulate in Canada.
