Why is it that when a korean website asks for my alien registration number it works half of the time? For example when I'm ordering something I click on foreigner registration, and then it asks for my alien registration number and it says its not valid. But then I go to another website and do the exact same thing it works?

You are not the only one. This has been exactly my experience. The ID works about 50% of the time. Welcome to life as a foreigner in Korea!

Some sites have installed the software that processes ARC numbers and some have not. This is also true of some local gu offices.

I'm pretty sure Alien ARC isn't handled the same way as Korean Resident IDs. For example I couldn't buy Starcraft 2 with my Alien ARC. It just didn't work. I highly doubt that was the case for Korean Resident IDs.

I have this problem, too. For example, I was able to register for Ticketmonster, but the other Korean deal sites said that my name didn't match my ID number, even though I checked the option for "외국인". It drives me crazy!

The last seven digits of ID numbers tell the story. For foreign men born in the 1900s, the first number of the last seven is a 5. For foreign women, that's a 6. Korean men born in the last century have a 1, Korean women have a 2. Korean citizens born after 2000 have a 3 or 4 depending on their gender.

Many websites are only equipped to handle a string starting with a 1 or a 2.

This. Frankly it drives me nuts every time I want to register on a site to buy something or for an online game etc. Then I'd have to move on to the next site and cross my fingers.
