i'm not sure why you quoted me because what you're saying isn't what i'm saying.
i'm asking why is it such a big deal to be asked what part of the states you're from? it's just out of habit, because most foreigners i meet without an accent are usually from america. MY BAD.
if someone asked me if i was from canada or mistook me from canada, i wouldn't scoff at them or make any lame remark. i'd just say "oh, i'm from ____."
still don't get why canadians get offended about that issue. |

interesting thread.
never had any problems with canadians although some have gotten offended when i ask them which part of the states they are from. . |
I don't understand why Americans think this ok.
I've even talked to Americans who I thought were nice, educated people, who actually argue that it's ok to call Canadians "Americans" because we're North Americans. The thought crossed my mind that maybe I need to accept the logic behind this statement, but when I ran the idea past friends and family still in the motherland, they were really shocked that I could even consider such a thing.
Please don't call us 'Americans' without the 'North' designation. ^^
Thanks. |
I think this flows from the argument, usually of Latin American origin, that Americans shouldn't be calling themselves as such due to the fact that all people from the Americas are Americans. If you accept that premise, which I've heard argued on many occasions, then Canadians fall into the greater American umbrella by default. |

You read the Guardian, don't you, Privateer? |
Guardian readers are normally squeamishly polite individuals who would never do something as crass as demanding every American they meet justify policy x. |
