Textbooks to go digital by 2015

By Lee Hyo-sik

Paper-based textbooks will likely disappear from elementary and secondary schools here by 2015 as students will learn English, math and other subjects through computers and other digital devices, the government said Wednesday.

In a report to President Lee Myung-bak, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the Presidents Council on Information Strategies jointly unveiled Smart Education Strategies, aimed at enabling both students and teachers to more effectively engage in lectures and other learning activities.

The education ministry said it will secure 2.23 trillion won to build the necessary infrastructure and purchase personal computers and other digital devices over the next four years.

Under the plan, paper-based textbooks, reference books, dictionaries and other materials will be digitalized for elementary schools by 2014.

By 2015, all middle- and high-school students will take lessons using digital textbooks and online-based materials on computers, smartphones and other devices.....

The dynamic and even type of lessons will change drastically.

Have any of you ever tried to teach a class of youths who all have laptops open infront of them......? That's right, they do NOT listen or concentrate at all on the teacher.

Lessons that use computers will have far less need of the teacher. More of simply a tutor or helper. Students will move through computer materials at their own pace.

I suspect the English lesson will not involve students with computers open infront of them but rather everything which cannot simply be done on the computer, will be done with the teacher. Which means no laptops.

There is a great need for the teacher to have technology such as projectors and videos and online textbooks.

But I just cannot see a class with 30 students looking at their laptops as a place where the teacher is even needed, as a teacher, rather as just a helper to individual students - tutor.

Okay... there is NO MONEY to train and keep teachers (notice I didn't say NETs) PROPERLY in English Language Education.

However, there is TONS OF MONEY to buy laptops/computers/tablets for every child in every classroom in the country so they can plug into EBS, IScream, Naver, and Daum? You Fail, Korea.

Samsung don't make English teachers.... yet.

When they do there will be enough money to buy them.
