| To have a spousal visa, you have to be married. Just go down to your local judge and do a quick cheap ceremony then you can bring him over. |

| That won't work if either (a) the marriage cannot be contracted in the home country or (b) the marriage won't be recognized in Korea. |

+1
I know that Korea will not allow this for gay couples, even if they provide a marriage certification from the US. |

Dude, you can bring her and don't listen to these guys...she can stay w/me. |
I guess it's settled then. Her bf will be shacking up with you. Bed, bathrobes, towels and socks can be shared but you will have to buy him his own toothbrush. |

Hey Everyone,
THANK YOU for all of your prompt replies. I have been considering taking the leap and trying teaching in Korea for at least a year now (yes, last year I stalked these forums) and have become re-inspired. Just trying to see what is "realistic" as for a "plan" and "option". Trying to make solid and smart decisions. Thanks again everyone. He and I will be seriously discussing this. Perhaps I can convince him to get certified.
Be well. |
If he has no college degree, his job prospects are greatly limited in Korea even if he is more than a construction worker (Korean companies have enough engineers and such). Perhaps he can visit you in Korea but to have him for the whole time you're here might prove problematic. |

| Nonsense, he'll be teaching illegally in no time. And when he's down in immi's lock-up a year from now result of their annual illegal alien sweeps, he'll think back to this thread...briefly. |

I have.
And when one gets busted, they usually end up catching a few of their friends. |

Stop scaremongering, I've been here for 20 years and I've never seen that. |

i've known A LOT of people who have done privates over the years, and i've always warned them to be careful.
but not one of them got busted. it's weird. is it because we're not in seoul? |

Well, in my 10 years here, I've known more than a handful.
Heck, just last year, someone ratted out one in my building...ended up half a dozen either left Korea in a hurry or got tagged by Immi.
If you've never met/known someone who's gone through it, so be it. But I certainly have. |

Over the years there have been plenty of stories of about immigration sweeps and crackdowns. These are mostly focused on illegal teachers...but illegal teachers do privates too.
I've also known a few legal teachers who were busted for teaching privates as well. Deportation/fines seemed to be the common punishment handed out. |
