Where did you get this from exactly? Ariyang TV?
From almost anyone I've ever talked to this isn't even close to being true. The influx of ESL teachers is mainly due to the disaster in Japan (their 1st choice but fear pushed them to look for alternatives) and competitive salaries.

Still, in 2011, its rare for me to meet someone in my home country who knows ANYTHING about Korea other than the fact they eat dogs. Truth.

It's called "ignorance". Don't generalize everyone in your home country... it's just you and your family. And you're absolutely right that most Koreans eat dogs like 3 times a day.

Again S. Korea has recently become a popular destination for teaching English and a lot of folks come here because they like Korea and her culture.

WRONG. People come here because the economy in their home country sucks and it's a good way to make money. Zero, zip, zilch, NADA foreigners have told me they left their home country for ajummas elbowing them in the side, kimchi breath at 9 in the morning, and having the wrestle their hagwon owners for money owed to them.

You're really delusional about Korea. You're probably one of those dudes who walks around his neighborhood in a hanbuk singing K-pop.

mfao @ the guy that said Korea is a hidden "gem" waiting to be discovered?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You're over a year late with that line. Yet here I am in Seoul with another gig making bank, relaxing in my spacious apartment with a beer and my beautiful girlfriend, getting a kick out of Dave's in my free time.

If that's a sad soul, then excuse me while I wipe my tears of joy with a tissue

lol

Jesus. Ok, you are quite clearly Kor-American or someone with some significant percentage of han in his/her blood. You are completely blinded by your nationalistic pride.

When it comes to tourism Korea is at the bottom of the barrel. You do know this right? This is far more telling that people coming here to work in the ESL industry.

Tourists want beautiful scenery and beaches -- Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines

Unique Asian culture -- China

Dynamic modern city -- Tokyo

Amazing mouth watering food -- anywhere but Korea

Sorry to burst your little bubble but Korea is strictly utilitarian. Anyone flocking here is doing so for a paycheck and nothing besides. Those who say they are here for the culture and "dynamic" lifestyle would quickly change their tune (and residence) if every Asian country offered what Korea offers to unqualified "teachers." This place would be a ghost town.

But keep on watching Arirang for your world news.

So how much han is in this girl's blood?

While it may blow your mind, there are hundreds of people doing similar introductions and practicing Korean, because they are interested in Korean culture and want to come here for the experiences.

Hell, you can also check out all the kids dancing and singing to kpop on youtube. Go to soompi.com and see how many non-Koreans hang out there simply to talk about Korean culture.

for eveyr one of these there are ten for Japan, China other countries in America or South American countries . Hundreds is nothing is nothing compared to the thousands or millions that other countries get. I think some you people are stuck in this Korean bubble. I am sorry but before coming to Korea I knew very little about this country esp. Kpop, the sites found in Korea, and anything cultural. And that goes to most people that I know. Some people actually feared for my life because of N.Korea. Korea does a good job of having people think that the world knows of Korea while in Korea but seriously that is a different matter in the real world.

From what I heard, loads of folks came over to teach during the World Cup and left briefly after.

I wonder if the same will happen in 2018.
