I'm looking for a really good Chinese supermarket where you can buy a range of Chinese ingredients, and hopefully ingredients for Malaysian and Thai food too?
I know about the supermarkets in Itaewon - but I don't think they are all that good. Does anyone know of others elsewhere in Seoul? Ideally I'd like to find one which stocks mainly Chinese ingredients. |

You'll have to go where the Chinese people live... which is not Itaewon. The highest concentration of Chinese in Seoul is in the Southwest of the city. There are a huge number of Chinese markets in the area around Daerim and Namguro stations. There's a street near Bongcheon station with several. A few around the Shinwon market near Shillim Station and I know a few more in the Gwangmyeong market near Gwangmyeong Sageori (not techincally Seoul but close enough). These are just the ones I've been to. I've also seen some places around Yeongdeungpo and I'm sure there's plenty more that I don't know about. They seem to sell almost all Chinese products... Chinese beer/liquor, spices, snacks, other packaged foods, and meats that Koreans don't usually eat (lamb in particular). Look for the Chinese signs and often these places have little tables with phones outside for cheap international calls... they're not that hard to spot.
My only complaint is that while there are seemingly hundreds of these little shops, there doesn't seem to be any big markets with a larger selection. Every place I've been to is more or less an exact clone of all the other ones. This seems to be the case with the restaurants too... plenty of lamb skewer joints and shabu shabu places, but nothing else.
The other thing to consider is that the Chinese food that is popular in North America and Europe is primarily Cantonese (Southern China) while the vast majority of Chinese people living in Korea are from Northeast China. China is a big country and the regional cuisines can be totally different. I mention this especially since you asked about Malaysian and Thai foods... You simply won't find that stuff at Chinese markets in Korea.
What sort of Chinese ingredients are you looking for anyway? If you're more specific someone might be able to help you. |

thanks Nick,
we live not far from Sillim - in dongjak-gu, so I'll check out the ones round there. My wife just said she thinks there'll be some round Gasan digital complex too, because there's quite a population of people from other Asian countries living round there.
I'm not exactly sure what ingredients I'm looking for - but in the UK we used to have the common ingredients in, because I've always liked cooking Chinese food. Things like: yellow bean paste, whole dried black beans, dried mushrooms, hoi sin sauce, black vinegar, Shaoxing Rice wine.
I would like to try making some new things too though - because I tend to use the same flavours all the time. Tried using szechuan peppercorns, a few times - but the result was like eating sand - could never figure out what I was doing wrong. |

Could you please be more specific. I live in Dangsan and would love to know where a Chinese supermarket is close to me!!
Many thanks. |
