Well, I'm going to be in Asia for Christmas, but decided I wanted to get out of Korea. I'm planning on going to Japan for Christmas and New Years, but was wondering about places to go and the best things to see. I'm trying to plan ahead and start saving up for the trip now.

I'm planning on taking the Beetle across to Fukuoka from Busan, then taking the JR Rail (JR 7 Day Pass) to Tokyo. However, I just wanted to know a couple things from experienced travelers:

1) How much should I budget for 7 days in Japan? I'm not planning on drinking or partying, just touristy stuff. I may have a beer on New Years Smile

2) What are some places I should definitely go? The JR Pass is unlimited train rides, so I can go most anywhere. The only places I definitely want to go are Kyoto and Tokyo at this point, but am open to all suggestions.

Thanks!

Not partying and including accommodation and some touristy stuff you better plan on US$200 per day for your stay.

Are you sure you get a break at Christmas?

Wow, $200 huh? I guess I can swing that. I'm going to try and be cheap. Eat from noodle stands and local mini-marts...etc. Also, I'm going to try and stay in the PC cafes that provide a mat on the floor for 1500 yen for 8 hours at night. Lacking that, I will try and find a hostel or perhaps check CouchSurfing for a place.

I was told I could take my vacation time anytime during the winter vacation for my school (which starts before Christmas). I will just have to plan my winter camps accordingly.

You're probably better off skipping the beetle and catching a flight from Busan with Air Busan to Kansai Intl. Airport, just south of Osaka. Personally, I like Fukuoka, but if you've only got a week you're better off spending it in Kansai (Kyoto/Osaka/Kobe) and Tokyo.
If you buy them in advance you can get pretty cheap flights. I've got a flight with them in September from Busan to Kansai for about $260 return. You might save a bit of money on the beetle, but then you still have to take the shinkansen for a few hours to get to Osaka or Kyoto.
The $200 a day mentioned by ttompatz I would say is possible, but you can definitely do it for cheaper. I lived in Japan for 3 years and traveled all over and certainly did it for cheaper than that. Of course it depends what you plan to do, but you can get a private room in a hostel in Kyoto (K's House for example) for about $50 a night. You can easily get a simple meal for $10 at many different places (food only).

I agree and would even go so far as to say you should fly into Tokyo or Osaka and leave from which ever city you didnt arrive.

The JR Pass helps you save money, but you can buy cheaper, regional passes. There are also VERY NICE overnight coach buses that can help you save money on travel costs.

You would probably rather spend your time enjoying Japan rather than on a train traveling to whereever it is you want to go. I think a lot of people dont realize how large Japan really is.

Personally I loved Kyoto (you could spend a week or two there alone easily) and the Kansai region. Tokyo is a blast too and should not be missed.

I would try to visit western Japan on another trip (if you have the option).
