It wasn't particularly long ago in the West when a man beating his wife or children would have been a "family problem" that others would have been expected to politely ignore rather than intervene regarding. I think differences like this have more to do with the West's progressive departure from family-oriented society than anything peculiar to Confucian society. From a global and historic perspective, it's the modern West that's the odd man out.

Guarantee the OP lost a few grand out of this. Koreans will stick up for other Koreans, no matter how ridiculous the scenario is. Sad lesson to be learned here.

Advice: Don't push or hit Koreans when you are in close proximity to the area you are currently living or can be identified. Also, don't push or hit Koreans if you detect a camera nearby. That's what usually works best for me.

Yup. I got hit by a scooter in a running path in Anyang. The path was marked with one of those no scooter signs, there were steel beams sticking out of the ground blocking the way for vehicles, I was running on the runner's path with headphones on and he plowed me from behind. I wasn't hurt but he spilled all of his goods.

I had to pay him off. Not so much because I felt it was right but more because I was surrounded by adjosshi that were defending him. They said that I needed to pay more attention, that I needed to run on the right side of the runner's trail (the trail doesn't specify which side to be on), that if I want to run then I should go to a fitness club, yadda yadda.

I didn't call the cops because I figured they would probably agree with him too, despite him clearly being in the wrong in every way imaginable. It's just the way things roll around here.

Hahah. I just received a detailed PM about OP's personal life, ie he's just as big of a tool and dbag IRL as the people in this thread are accusing him of. the messager will remain anonymous as are all people who hit my PM box with the juice.

Trust me, based on what I've been told, OP deserves EVERYTHING coming his way.

That's why its so irritating to be a Westerner and a foreigner in Korea. The duty you'd immediately give to others is not as forthcoming from them. The foundations of reciprocity we have come to rely upon since childhood have been radically altered.

Ever lived in a big Western city? Unless you know the other person there's very little "duty" shown to others. Whether it's two people fighting or a homeless drunk sleeping it off in the middle of the sidewalk most people will ignore it and walk on by. Eventually somebody will call the cops but apart from that nothing much is done. Heck people have been murdered in broad daylight within in earshot of plenty of people and nothing was done about it at all.

No, you chose to pay. Be honest about it.
What an odd story. You got hit, from behind even, by a motorized vehicle, on a running path. How were you in any way at fault? I know we are living in bizarro world here as far as the law goes, but still...why fold so easily? It's what they are counting on and we know the locals will often corroborate lies but why pull out your wallet at the drop of a hat? You got hit from behind. F... them.
Apparently the accident injured your backbone, because that seems like a really poor choice to pay for something like that.

Well now that you've let the cat out of the bag, don't you think we deserve to know a little tidbit, or something to keep our juices flowing for cryin out loud?

This reminds me of an article I saw in the newspaper earlier this year about a bus driver who went to jail because he injured a passenger who was sexually assaulting (groping) a female passenger.

Anyone could claim that. Whether he's a tool or not, just wondering why you are getting random detailed PM's about his personal life and why random people chose you to send them to. Were you fishing for personal information on people? Seems a bit creepy. Also, aren't we anonymous on here anyway?

Nice one, brah. Some random guy I know just received a detailed PM about your personal life, ie you're just as big of a tool and dbag IRL as the people in this thread might have guessed. the messager will remain anonymous as are all people who hit his PM box with the juice. See? Anyone could claim that, brah.
I don't believe it though, I'm on your side brah.
